Australians v. Oldham
The Liberals and the Oocupation of Cyprus.

At the Paris Exhibition the Australian wools excel greatly. They will probably be awarded the first prize, besides the gold meda in most sections. The Australian exhibits stand conspicuously high. Foreign Governments are asking quotations for preserved moats.
The Colonial Office has distributed the prospectus of the Sydney Exhibition, and has received applications from foreigners and British for space. The Liberals will oppose the occupation of Cyprus on account of it being an apparent alliance with Turkey, and a protection of her Asiatic dependencies. The Liberals think that the Ottoman mis-government precludes an English alliance.

The Australians have played against eighteen of Oldham. The first innings of Oldham closed for 138. The Australians have eight out for 115. Gregory made 43.

[pee PRESS AGENCY.] Wellington, July 15
A telegram has been received by the Government from Adelaide, dated Monday, stating that the English mail steamer wa.sighted off Cape Borda at. nine tins morning. Waitara, July 15.
On Saturday night about thirty Waikato Natives who had been drinking during the day attempted to pull down and burn the Waitara ITotel. The constable called upon the Europeans to assist him in arresting the ringleaders, when a serious row took place. No one was seriously hurt, although blood was llowing freely. The ringleaders were eventually lodged in gaol, but. owing to the threats of the Natives, and an attempted rescue of the prisoners, they were released by order of Mr Thomas Baylor, J.P. The affair caused great excitement, and blame is laid with the Police Department for not having a proper staff located here. Tapanui, July 15.
On Saturday at 5 p.m. the large stables, barn and chaff house belonging to John Cameron, Spylaw, wore totally destroyed, also 400 bushels of oats. Insured in the Victoria for £l5O. The estimated less is £4OO. The origin of the fire is unknown. This is the fourth similar case of fire in this district in a few months where stables have been destroyed, and no cause could be assigned for the outbreak ; and all insured in the Victoria office.
