The Longwood Reefs. —The “ Southland Times” of July 3rd says:—The news to hand from Longwood is on the whole unsatisfactory. The development of the field is progressing very slowly, lacking the fillip only to be imparted by something certain on the good side respecting the value of the prospectors’ find, or a substantial find elsewhere. We are still as much in the dark as ever on the point. That t here is a lode in Hayes’ claim can only be taken on trust. That it is auriferous is still more problematical, nothing really demonstrable on either question has been forthcoming. We had hoped that the granting of a lease to the prospectors, and their subsequent action in sinking on the alleged reef, would by this time have placed the issue beyond doubt. But instead of this we hear of complications. The prospectors have ceased work, have locked up their shaft, and are now preparing to contest in the Warden’s Court a claim made by Howell and party for a portion of their ground.
