The New Caledonia Rising

Sydney, July 11

The cause of the natives rising was that certain chiefs had been seized as hostages for the delivery of the murderers of Clune, a settler, and his family. The natives rose during tho night, and murdered the guard, rescued the chiefs, devastated tho settlements. The affairs of the island are in a critical state. There is an insufficient military force unless France comes to tho rescue. Possibly a petition will be presented for English annexation. The Sappho brings four destitute miners from New Guinea. Payable gold has not been discovered, but the weather impedes operations. Game is plentiful, and the natives are friendly. A Russian traveller has refused to give information regarding New Guinea. It is believed that it is at his settlement where the heavy gold was recently obtained.

Mr J. C. Brown addressed his constituents last night and received a vote of thanks at conclusion of his speech. At one of the principal polling booths at Taieri yesterday, the returning officer locked the door and went for his dinner; consequently some electors were unable to gain admittance to the polling booth.
