The following, which is authentic, tells not unfavorably for poor >o d Lei? rim. H" was a man of strong likes and dislikes, and one of his chief antipathies w a a horror of goats. An old woman, one of his tenants, had a favourite goat, which he espied one <iay and made her bring up to him bv the side of the road. Without a word of warning he took out his knife and cut its throat. The woman, as far as she dared, reproached him with bis ruthless act whereupon he gave her a £2O note, saying, " Take this to buy a cow with." It was characteristic of the man ; hird, unyielding, easily moved to anger, but as swift to make ameuds, and alwayn inexorably just.
