At 1.15 this morning the s.s. Eingarooma arrived in harbor with the s.s. Wanaka in tow, having picked up that steamer in a disabled condition 10 miles to the eastward of Akar-ja, at 7.30 p.m yesterday. Having towed in the Wanaka to a berth oil Diamond Harbor, the Eingarooma took aboard the Wanaka’s mail (of which there were no less than 97 bags, including inward 8m Francisco mail) and passengers (17 saloon and three steerage), and sailed again for Port Chalmers at 3.30 a.m. It will be remembered tha u the Wanaka left Lyttelton at 1 p.m. on the 9th, and had fine weather as far as the Long Look Out, but off that point encountered a fresh S.S.W. breeze, which rapidly increased to a furious gale, a fearful sea running. The steamer made but slow progress against the gale, and when about fifty miles to the southward of Akaroa at 3.30 a.m. yesterday a tremendous sea struck the vessel, carrying off all three blades of her propeller, and of course rendering her perfectly helpless as far as steaming is concerned. Captain Mciiillivray, finding u impossible to proceed, had the fore-and-aft canvas set, and shaped a course for Lyttelton. Arrived off Akaroa at 1 p.m. yesterday, but it tnen fell calm, continuing so till 7.30 p.m., when the s.s. Eingarooma, bound from Lyttelton to Port Chalmers, sighted her, and taking her in tow, brought her back to Lyttelton, at which port she arrived at 1.15 a.m. to-day. There is a spare propeller blade aboard, and anoth r at Port Chalmers, which will be brought up to-morrow in the s.s. Taranaki. It is intended to beach the Wanaka at Dampier’s Bay, and ship these two new blades on her propeller, when she will proceed to Port Chalmers to be docked. The saloon passengers gave the following address to Captain McGillivray “ We, the undersigned, saloon passengers, desire to express our sympathy with you under the trying circumstances in which you have been placed by the unfortunate accident (which, iu our opinion, no human foresight could have prevented), and by which your screw propeller was rendered useless, and to bear our testimony to the zeal and earnestness with which you have endeavoured to conserve the interests of your employers, and our thankfulness for the care and anxiety you have evinced to secure the safety and comfort of your passengers. Hoping that you may long be spared to navigate these coasts without any recurrence of simiLr accidents.” —Signed by all the saloon passengers. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Port Chalmers, July 11.
