MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday July 11. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —Martin Yasey was fined 10s and William Galvin, 60s. Both men had been previously convicted. VAGRANCY. — Timothy Sullivan was charged with having no lawful visible means or support. Detective Benjamin proved that prisoner was the associate of low characters. Mr Sheppard, of the White Hart, proved prisoner to be continually hanging about his bar. Prisoner paid for his drinks. He had frequently caused disturbances. George Price, barman, gave similar evidence. To prisoner—You might have spent a shilling perhaps in the house. Charles Caxton, barman in the Southern Hotel, deposed to prisoner sitting in the hotel bar nearly all day, and taking every opportunity for obtaining drinks. Sergeant Hughes gave prisoner the character of a “ loafer.” The case was adjourned for twenty-four hours in order to give accused an opportunity of clearing out of the town. Neglected Children. George and Thomas Mummery, who had been remanded from the previous day as neglected childen were, under clause 3 of section 13 of the Neglected and Criminal Childrens’ Act, sent to the Industrial School for seven and nine years respectively. James Mummery, the father, deposed that he was unable to obtain employment. Had applied to Mr March for relief, but not to have the children removed. He had not tasted drinks for weeks. The Bench warned witness that if he did not look better after the other children he would order witness to pay for the support of the child red in the school, as it was, an order would be made for payment of a nominal sum per week. Rare. —Timothy Houlihan was charged with this offence, and remanded on the application of Inspector Hickson, till Monday, the 15th instant.
