alising £2462, find 42 acres were alienated from the Crown, under the provisions of the Middle Island Half-Castes Land Act, 1877. LAND SALES. Messrs H. Matson and Co, held yesterday a most successful hind sale. The land pnt np comprised the Linwood Estate, the property of F. H. Brittan, Esq., which had been subdivided into 221 sections. It is situated beyond the Stanmore road, at a distance of about a mile from the centre of Christchurch, and in order to enable the purchasers to have ready means of- access to it some additional land had been purchased, the surplus of which,not required for the road, had been subdivided into seven additional sections. The total number of sections, therefore, was 231, and of these 230 were sold, the odd one being set aside as a reserve. The area sold was 58 acres, which realised an average price of £3lB 15s 6d per acre, or a total of £18,489 10s. Of this amount £ll2O was for the land not, strictly ape king, belonging to the Linwood Estate, leaving as the net price of this £17,309 10s. It is worth of remark that Mr Brittan some time ago offered to sell the estate, for the purpose of its being converted into a public park, for £IO,OOO. In addition to the above, Messrs Matson and Co. sold a town section in Cox street, Ashburton, with a new six-roomed house upon it, for £450. At the sale of land held by Messrs E. Walton and Co., at their rooms, Hereford street, Christchurch, yesterday, the following sales wore effected : —176 acres of laud, with 5-roomed house, South Rakaia, belonging to Messrs A and C. Withell, sold for £7 per acre, equal to £1232; Ashburton town section 821, with cottage, sold for £260; 50 New Zealand Shipping shares, £5 paid, sold for 90s each, £225 ; 50 New Zealand Shipping shares, £5 paid, sold for 87s 6d, £2lB 15s, 25 acres. Russell’s Plat, £7 per acre, £175; 180 acres, province of Auckland, 14s, £120; Opawa. about 1 acre, £l5O ; section corner of P. terborongh and Madras street, £250; 600 acres land at Hinds, £2 17s Od per acre, £1725; Whitecliffs, town of South Malvern, the following sections were disposed of, viz., 13 to 18, six sections, at £l2 each. £72 ; Nos. 45 and 46, £l6 each, £32 ; Nos. 47 and 48, £l3 10s each, £27; Nos. 19 and 44, £l3 each, £26; total, £4510 15s. The attendance was limited, owing to counter attractions, and the heavy hailstorm militated against the sale. The auctioneers, therefore, postponed the sale of the Rolleston township sections, Whiteclitfs sections, and other valuable properties until Saturday next at 2 o’clock. COMMERCIAL TELEGRAMS, Napier, July 9. Carter’s Opoiti estate, Wairoa District, containing 30-20 acres, freehold, with 1100 sheep, 00 cattle, and a few horses, plant, and improvements, was sold for £7OOO, to Mr Dongle, of Balclntha. An important land sale was hold to-day, when excellent prices were realised. The sale comprised sections in Napier and the townships of Woodville, Havelock, and Awatoto. The total amount of the sale was £5259.
