Greek Question Settled. Batoum given to Russia,

[from our own correspondent.] London, July 6. Congress has settled the Greek question, granting her a small increase of territory. July' 7. Batoum has been given to Russia, England obtaining Pirot for Servia, Batoum becoming a free port, and having the fortifications demolished. An English and Russian Commission assembles in Armenia to prevent a conflict. [SPECIAL TELEGRAMS to the press AGENCY.] London, July 6. Congress has invited Greece and Turkey to agree to an extension of the Hellenic frontier, which is proposed to be from Larissa to the Adriatic. Batoum is threatened with an attack by the Russians. The first innings of the Stockport Eighteen closed for 105. Blaokham etumped four and caught three. In the second innings the Australians made 225. Horan played a splendid innings of 75. The second innings of Stockport closed for 134. The game was won by the Australians with 149 runs to spare. It is rumored from. Paris that two gold medals have been awarded to Victorian vinegrowers. The corn market is heavy and inactive, one million quarters afloat.

[FEB PBEBB AGENCY.] Wellington, July 8. William O'Connor, found guilty of attempting jto poison Wra. Light, was brought for sentence this morning. The prisoner made a long statement, lasting about an hour and a bull', with the view of showing that he could not have been guilty, and called several witnesses to testify to his good character, including Superintendent Shearman. The prisoner several times called Heaven to witness that he was innocent of the crime of which he was found guilty. The Chief Justice, after a tew brief remarks, sentenced O'Connor to ten years' penal servitude. Timaeit, July 8. The valuable thoroughbred stallion Detractor died yesterday. The "Temuka Leader" is to be resucitated. Mr Alexander Wilson is the purchaser. Tho remains of a large cuttle fish was picked up in Carolino Bay on Saturday afternoon, one arm being 4ft. in length. A peculiar occurrence took place on Saturday afternoon. Two men, engaged sinking a well near Mr Ormsby's new mill, having got 60ft. deep, suddenly Btruck water which spouted up to the height of 30ft. One man was rescued without much difficulty, but the other was nearly drowned owing to delay. He was much exhausted when he reached the top. Dunbdin, July 8. The proposed classification of echool teachers is likely to cause a great dtal of dissatisfaction. The Dunedin branch of the Educational Inst itute haß decided to request the Inspector-General to forward to the Institute a statement of the principles of tho classification of teachers, in order that the Instituto may discuss them before the clasaification is made.
