MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, July 6. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —Johanna Mahoney was fined 10s, and ordered to pay Is 6d cab hire. Embezzlement. —Rowan Lockhead appeared, on remand, charged, under the Foreign Offenders Apprehension Act, with embezzlement. John McKenna deposed—l am a constable of the Victorian police, stationed at Wodonga, in the colony of Victoria. I know the prisoner. I produce a warrant for his arrest. It is signed by James Banbrick, as Justice of the Peace for the for the northern bailiwick of Victoria. I saw the warrant signed by Mr Banbrick. Prisoner is the man for whom the warrant is issued. I know that prisoner was secretary to the Wodongo Building and Investment Society. I produce a copy of depositions relating to the charge set forth in the warrant. I was present when the original depositions were taken before Mr Banbirck. I saw them signed by the witnesses. I compared the copy produced with the original depositions, and they are correct. I ask that prisoner may be remanded to Wodonga to answer the charge. I am the constable named in the warrant. Prisoner declined to ask witness any questions, and was committed to the Lyttelton gaol pending his extradition. A Waif. —lnspector Hickson informed the Bench that a little girl had been that morning brought to the depot by a sergeant, who had found her lying on a bundle in the open air. She stated that her age was twelve in February ; that she had been in service at Gust, as a nursemaid, but that, the baby dying, her services had been no longer required. She had walked from the Oust, and intended to walk to Timaru, where she had a brother and sister, the latter married. Sergeant Morrice informed the Bench that the child’s father was killed, about two years ago, by the kick of a bullock, and that her mother had died since. Her walk from the Oust had rendered her very foot-sore. A gentleman in Court offered to take the girl into service as a nurse —an offer which she readily accepted.
