MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, July 4. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —One first offender was fined ss. The following, who had been previously convicted, were fined as follows : Robert Rankin, Charles Edwards, and John Thatcher, 10s each; Ellon Jordan and Timothy Sullivan, 40s each. Transfer of License.— On the application of Mr Thomas, the licence of the Albion Hotel was transferred from Roger Kitt to John Barlow, lute of Papanui,
30th ult., was held yesterday. Present—Hon. John Hall (chairman Rakaia Road Board), Mr J. L. Wilson (chairman of Avon Road Board), Mr Peryman (chairman of Lincoln Rond Board), Mr Bailey (chairman Templeton Road Board). Mr J. L. Wilson wns elected chairman, A messenger was sent over to the Bank of New Zealand to ascertain if tho money had been lodged there by the Government, and the following memo, wns sent in reply : J. L. Wilson, E -q , Christchurch. Dear Sir —Replying to your memo, of this morning, I beg leave to state that we have received Treasury advices of payments to be made to various banks presumably for credit of ro id boards, but we are not in possession of any particulars. Tours faithfully, J. L. Coster. Upon receipt of the memo, from Mr Coster, the following telegram was at once sent to the Treasurer in Wellington : To the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer, Wellington. Committee of Road Board chairmen now sitting re payment of land fund. Will you be good enough to inform them whether balance due was remitted before 30th June, according to Government promi.se, or has been remitted since : also a statement of total amount remitted to Road Boards in County of Selwyn on account of such balance. Please reply as soon as possible, as the committee is waiting. Tho meeting was then adjourned until 2 p.m. to allow time for answer to arrive from Wellington. On the committee reassembling, The Hon. John Hall said that no telegram had been received from the Government in answer to tho one sent prior to the adjournment, but, from information received, they had reason to believe that very considerable deductions would be attempted to be made by the Government from the sura due to the Road Boards in the Canterbury provincial district. The following resolutions were then agreed to:—“That as it appears to the committee that the Government intend to make large and unlawful deductions from tho amounts due to the Road Boards, as on the 31st December, the committee decide that it is necessary to take legal proceedings as directed by the Conference of the 26th June, and that the chairman be authorised to consult Mr Joynt as to an opinion on the case, to be laid before the adjourned meeting of (he committee.” “ That tho chairman be requested to address a circular to the Road Boards and County Councils interested in the payment of this money, requesting their co-operation in the action decided upon.” The meeting then adjourned.
