1.0.G.T.— Young Crusader Juvenile Temple. —On Thursday, 4th July, a tea meeting and entertainment will take place in the Templar Hall. The members have for some time been busily practising for the meeting. A good programme has been prepa ed. Dog Collars.— From the first of this month the police no longer register dogs. That duty, as far as the city is concerned, devolving upon the town clerk. Yesterday the police handed over to the city authorities the dog collars which had been unissued by them. Theatre Royal. —The successful play of the New Magdalen was repeated last night at the theatre to a moderate house. The characters wore sustained as well as on the previous night, and the performance gave general satisfaction. Mishap on the Railway. —As the 4 p.m. train from Christchurch to Lyttelton was leaving the Tunnel mouth yesterday, the two front wheels of the second carriage went off the line just at the first points, The train was at once stopped and the carriage replaced on the line in a few minutes. Grants to Half-Castes.— Under the Middle Island Half-Caste Crown Grant Act, 1877, it is provided that grants of land shall be made to Half-Caste Natives. In accordance with this provision 92 acres were granted at the sittings of the Waste Lands Board of the Canterbury provincial district on Monday last. Unalienated Waste Lands— At the time the Canterbury Association first set aside the Waste Lands of the province, it was roughly estimated that 12,000,000 acres were available for purchase. It is calculated that an area of 5,569,010 acres 3 roods and 19 perches were unalienated at the close of the financial year ending 30th June last. Alteration in the Railway Tariff. — The following alterations in the rates for carriage of goods, to take effect from July Ist, are gazetted IStandards (Iron) for Fencing —Standards (iron), in bundles, to be carried under Class 0. If loose, under Class B. Class M—Horses and Cattle—Foals (one year old and under) to bo charged half the rate charged for horses. Footrall. —A match will bo played at Leestou on Saturday next, between fifteen of the Christchurch Club and a local fifteen. The Christchurch team will be chosen from the following ; —Atack, W. H., Afack, A. G., Bell, Bishop, Bray, Cotterill, W., Collins, Campbell, Field, Hawkos, L., Hales, Johnston, Lanauze, Mathias, McCardell, Parker, Beeves, Rule, and Saltmarsh, Any of the above who may be unable to play are requested to let the secretary know at once. The team will leave for Leeston by the first train on Saturday morning. Bad Sovereigns.— The “ Otago _ Daily Times ” cautions the public against being deceived by some very neatly finished counterfeit sovereigns now in circulation. One of these coins, which was passed over the bar of a hotel the other day, turned out to bo a gilded shilling of George the Fourth’s reign, although it did not appear to be much worn. Feveb in the Oitt. —Yesterday three cases of fever, one typhoid and two scarlet, were reported to the city inspector as existing in the north-east portion of the city. Appointments. —Mr G. Palairefc is appointed Registrar of Joint Stock Companies at Christchurch. Mr Keys, Postmaster at Malvern is appointed a depositary of Duty Stamps. Repairs to the Albion. —The repairs to the machinery of the steamship Albion have been completed by Messrs Anderson and Son and the shaft was sent away from their foundry yesterday afternoon. Normal School. —The teachers and students of the Normal School, who gave a successful entertainment about this time last year, are sparing no pains to ensure an equal triumph this year. Two high class dramatic and musical entertainments are announced for next week, and as the ranks of the students comprise amateurs of ability in both departments, there is little doubt that a great treat is in store. “ Roister Doister,” “ The Heir at Law,” and “ She Stoops to Conquer ” are said to be in preparation. The first-named is but little known, but as the work of a schoolmaster, and an excellent English comedy, it has claims alike on the profession and on the student of English literature. Admission on Wednesday will be by invitation only. On Thursday by tickets, to be obtained of any of the students, and at the booksellers. Ireland and the Irish. —A lecture on the above-named subject will be delivered tomorrow night in the Durham street Wesleyan Church, by the Rev. R. Hazleton. Mrs Arthur Tone’s Concert. —The programme for the grand vocal and instrumental concert to bo given to-morrow even ng by Mrs Arthur Toke, in the Oddfellows’ Hall, is advertised in this issue, and from its excellence ffiould secure a largo attendance of lovers of good music. ______
