CHRISTCHURCH POULTRY PIGEON AND CANARY SOCIETY.

Committee of Management—Messsrs T. Williams, T. Stapleton, E. Strange, W. H. Porter, E. Hawkes, J. Goodman, E. Rees, E. R. Deacon, C. Adkin, J. W. Holt, and G. A. Reade. Hon. Secretary—Mr W. Geo. Walker. The eleventh annual show of the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association took place yesterday in the new Oddfellows' Hall, Lichfield street, which was fitted up expressly for the occasion. The arrangements of the managing committee and the hon. secretary for the advantageous display of the exhibits were excellent. The body of the hall was devoted to the poultry, the pens being placed in double rows down the centre as wed as upon either side. The stage was set apart for the canaries, which were exhibited in new cages of an improved design, and made expressly for this show, admirably answering the intention of the committee in displaying the birds to the best advantage, and the room at the back of the hall was exclusively devoted to the pigeons, of which there was an unusually large number for exhibition.

This year's show can compare favourably in most respects with any that have preceded it, while in some of the classes there was a marked improvement in numbers, quality, and variety on the exhibitions of previous years. O wing to the large number of exhibits, and in some of the classes an unusual uniformity of excellence, the judges had not completed their task until nearly three o'clock, about which time the hall wag thrown open to the public. Commencing with the poultry, the Spanish and CochiD China fowls decidedly bore away the palm, the former class being represented by some magnificent birds. Mr R. Pridgeon's exhibit, which obtained a first and Mr H. Sawt ell's special prize, being a most beautiful bird. There were fifty-three exhibits of Cochins, and all of exceptional quality in most pointß, the decision of the judges in awarding the prizes being generally endorsed by the public. The classes of game birds generally showed no marked improvement on the exhibits of last year, except in one or two instances, although they were very numerous, Mr W. James' black-red cock being the only bird in the show that elicited unqualified admiration, and deservedly obtained first honors. An exhibit of Mr Nancarrow's in the same class was too young for exhibition, although a first class bird and perfect in shape and other qualities. He will, if exhibited next year, take a great deal of beating. With regard to the other classes, which were more numerous than the entries in them, no prominent features were presented for commendation, if we except a beautiful game hen exhibited by Mr A. Walker, and which was awarded a first prize, and an exhibit of Mr M. Donahue's which showed all the points that go to make up a perfect bird, and was similarly rewarded. There were only four exhibits of Malays, Mr Clephane carrying away a first and secret prize for two male oirds, a similar sward being given to Mr W. Lee for a fine hea. In Dorkings there were sixteen classes a*d fiftyfive entries, eight exhibit* only leing considered of sufficient interest M take first prizes. One of the fim*t birds in these classes was a magnificent hen ten months old, exhibited by Mr Ladbrooke. Two white Dorking co<ts sent by Mr W. H. Perymau were much admired. In Brahmas there was nothing exhibited .superior to the exhibits of other years, but the golden pencilled ff amburghs were rather more numerous. _/ The golden spangle! variety was represent/ret by one entry, to which a third was awarded, and of silver spangled Haraburghs there were only four exhibits, one of Mr J. Nancarrow's being adjudged worthy of first honors. A curiosity in the shape of a pen of four Japanese Bantams, direct from Yokohama, attracted much attention from their singular fluffy appearance, which bears as much resemblance to down as feathers. There were eleven pens of game bantams, two first prizes only being awarded. Mediocrity was the prevailing characteristic in this class. Turkeys made their re-appearance this year after a lengthy absence from the annual show, and a first and second prize was given to the only two exhihits in this class. .1 special granted by the society fell fo Mr Mayze, for a very fine goose, Ducks were represented by two varieties, the Aylesbury and Rouen, ice last mentioned containing some grand birds for si.re and weight;. Mr ]<:. W. "Millett obtained both a first and second prize for a pair of splendid birds, a duck and a drake. The various classes of pigeon i were numerously reprtsented, and attracted as much attention as any other department of the show. First in importance' c-ime the Ant> k werps. of which there was a far larger repre • M sentation than last year. Some of the birds had been imported direct from Belgium, one of the exhibits having performed a journey on the wing of ."00 miles. Several of the young bird-' bred from those that have into the colony have turned out beauties. A pair of red-chequered b'rdjS of Mr Walker's were especially Some of the nidges' decisions in this class cited considerable comment, and an oi inion ™ was pretty freel. exi ressed that not quite so much discernment as might b n desired had been exhibited in making the awards. There was a fair lot of carriers, though scarcely up to the standard of former years, the veteran black cock that again repeated his triumphs of previous shows being the most noticeable bird iu this class. Dun carriers were fairly represented by acme nice birds, but their colour was not perfect. The class of dragoons was meritorious all through, Mr Walker's birds again in this class showing a marked superiority. These birdi? are daily growing into favor, some of the exhibits cf the jentlemac named having been imported direct from Mr Fulton, the noied English breeder. The clasa cf pouters contained some very good birds, colour and shape being equa'ly good, although in more than one instance they might have been better pinioned. There were five entries for almond tumblers, first pri:;eo being awarded to Mr W. Smith for a coci: and 1 en. The kites were very fair specimens, but scarcely up to last year's mark. Barbj, fantails, jacobins, nuns, and owls were all creditably represented. Espe ially noteworthy were two pairs of silver owls shown by Air Donohue, which well deserved first and second prizes. The birds entered for the race to-da from Timaru were dispatched yesterday, ! / the 11.40 train, and will be liberated at 10 a.m. thie morning. They are expected So accomplish the rfrtameia about two

The various classes of canaries were well represented, the Belgians and Norwich birds attracting a large amount of; attention. Of the former clasß there ; were several variegated and very beautiful exhibits. The Norwich showed a marked improvement, and whenthe birds have been longer in hand they will be in better condition, arid more fit for exhibition. Their recent importation militated against their condition. Messrs Stapleton and Muschamp were the largest prizetakers, the former obtaining eight first prizes with a great variety of exhibits; Messrs Deacon, W. C. Hill, and Mrs C. H. Williams also successfully competed for honors. A novelty in the shape of a selffeeding hopper was exhibited in the pigeon department, the idea is ingenious and useful. The prizes for the art union were drawn last night, and their superiority gave universal satisfaction, including as they do first class canaries, pigeons, and different varieties of choice poultry. The following is the PRIZE LIST. Judges—Mr E. Rees, for game, Malays, and game bantams ; Mr T. Stapleton, for Dorkings and Spanish; Mr J.
