W. breeze. , , ~ The schooner Maid of Otago arrived from the Sound at nine this morning. The s.s. St. Hilda, for Wellington, and Wanganui and Wanaka for Auckland via East Coast, both sail this afternoon. . , The schooner Saxon, Captain McKenzie, left Mercury Bay on Friday, June 11th, at 8 p.m., aud had strong variab.e winds till arrival in harbor at 8 a.m. yesterday. The schooner Transit, Captain Hooper, left Auckland on Friday, June 14th. Had northerly winds to East Cape, thence westerly as far as Capo Kidnappers, thence southerly till arrival in harbor at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The harquentine Fairlie, Captain Norris, left Kaipara on Friday, June 15th, aud had N.W. winds to Cook’s Straits, thence heavy southerly winds till anchoring off the breakwater at noon on Saturday. uaptain Dick, of the brigantine Endeavor, reports to the “ New Zealander ” that on June 17th, when off the Haikouras, he sighted portions of a wreck, which he took to he a ship’s mast, standing in a, perpendicular position, and about four feet out of the water. „ . The s.s. St. Hilda, Captain Flowerday, loft Oamarn at 0 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived in harbor at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. Had heavy S.W. winds to the Peninsula, thence fine weather till arrival as above. She sails for Wellington and Wanganui to-day. . „ . „ , - , The barque Stag was signalled on Saturday, and anchored at the heads. No doubt she has run in here for shelter from the inclement weather that prevents her disch rgiug her coal at Timaru. The brigantine Flora, from the Bluff, which port she left on June 17th, with timber, arrived on Sa 'Xha d! s s. Wanaka, Captain M'Gillivray, left Port Chalmers at 3.30 pm. on 22nd, aud arrived in harbor at 9.45 a.m. yesterday. Experienced S.AV. winds during the passage. She brings 30 tons cargo for this port which she will discharge at the tot earners’ Wharf, aud sails for Auckland via East Coast to-day. _ „ , The schooner Albatross, Captain Bell, ielt Whaugapoa on Friday, Juno 14th, with northerly winds till off Hawke’s Bay, thence S. vV. till off Cape Pallisor, when the wind changed to N.W. Is sting till off Haikouras, thence B.W. till anchoring at the Heads at 5 p.m. on Saturday, aud coming to ini anchor inside the Breakwater nt 1 p.m. yesteriiio schooner Josephine, Captain O Connel, left the Thames on June 10th, and had light variables for three days, thou westerly winds as far ns East Capo, from thence light northerly winds till off tape Palliser, when there was a heavy southerly breeze lasting for forty-eight hours. Thou light aud variables till arrival m harbour at G a.m. yesterday. She was berthed at the Tunnel Wharf to discharge, the •'Southland News’’ of June 17th, says;— The splendid facilities offered to vessels visiting Port Chalmers to test taeir strength against bumping has long been an undisputed fact, and has within tile past tew days been aptly demonstrated to the heart's content of the passengers and others defused on board the steamers Kingfiroowa and
Taupo, who Will no doubt sing the praises of the port far and wide. Besides bumping, danger otherwise is also another excellent feature of the mud river, the steamers Wanganui and Suir of tho South both being damaged through shipping seas trying to get in and out of the port (save tho mark) recently. The Dunedin press is generally commenting on other ports in adverse strain. Wc should think now they will be able to amuse themselves with the defence of their so-called port. THE S.S. ALBION. This steamer, which did not leave Wellington till 2 p.m. on Sunday, was signalled early this morning, hut was observed to he proceeding very slowly, aud to he under sail. She got inside the Heads at noon, after being signalled throe hours, and brought up. The tug Titan wont down to her. Her main shaft broke this morning at six o’clock, when she was six ecu miles off the Hoads. She cannot proceed to Dunedin to-night. THE SOUKAE. This ship was towed up the harbor this morning. Her long passage has been caused by a succession of unfavourable winds and heavy adverse gales after passing tho Leewin. She was 51 days to tho Cape, 77 to the Leewin, and 105 from Scilly to the Snares. A number of the chain plates have been started, and some of the bulwarks carried away. All aboard are in good health, but a steerage passenger named Alexander Wilson was missed on May 22nd during a heavy gale when tho ship was rolling heavily. Sailed to-day, Wanganui, steamer, for Wcllincton Oil the heads, ship Denbighshire, from London. Bluff, June 24. The Gland Hamilton sailed at noon yesterday for Melbourne, but returned this morning in consequence of the south-west gale.
