CABLR_ N E W S Version of Auglo-Russian Agreement Incomplete. Congress Adjourned till Wednesday. Strikes in England Ended. Kaffir War Collapsing, [special to the press agency.] London, June 17. The Marquis of Salisbury proposed the admission of Greece to Congress. Prince Bismarck made several proposals regarding the order of business, but no decision resulted and Congress adjourned to Wednesday. The strikers have agreed to accept a reduction, and the mills will be re-opened generally on Wednesday. Ministers have declared to Parliament that the version of the Anglo-Russian agreement is incomplete. [eeutee’s special telegrams to the PRESS AGENCY.] London, June 17. In reply to a question, the Secretary of War stated that the terms of the agreement between the Marquis of Salisbury and Count Schouvaloff had been obtained surreptitously, and were incomplete. Sir Stafford Northcote appealed to the House to forego asking for further details. News from the Cape reports that the Kaffir war is collapsing. Berlin, June 17. The contractor for the buildings for the Native meeting completed his job ibis morning. Rewi comes to Waitara to-morrow, with two hundred followers. A great number are on their way from Mokau. A firm of auctioneers and estate agents here have refceiyed instructions from clients in Australia and England to -find invastmonts for £IOO,OOO in freehold or leasehold property, at rates ranging from 71 to 10 per cent. Mr Sheehan is expected to arrive by the Hincmoa from Auckland to-morrow, and will proceed with Sir G. Grey on the same day to Wuibara meeting. Rewi has not yet been invited to take his seat in the Upper House, ic is understood (hat a good deal will depend on the result of the Waitara meeting whether he will be or not. The Court-house is to bo sold, whether anybody oI - j cts or not. Hokitika, June 19. The Bsnk of New Zealand shipped G6780z. of gold per Albion from hero to-day, and 6386'jz. from Greymouth this week, making a total value of £52,250. General dissatisfaction is expressed at the manner in which the City Council recently dealt with tenders. Mr D. Reid has ];een asked by the Council to report generally upon the rural and suburban estates of the corporation of Dunedin. The nomination tor Dunedin will tike place on the 26th, and the poll on July Ist. An inmate of the Lunatic Asylum, Mary Pring, recently committed suicide by hanging herself from the cell door with her stay laces.
The Macassey and Reed libel cases are adjourned till to-morrow week, but it is understood that they arc virtually settled. Dunedin, June 19.
About thirty members of the Dunedin bar met in the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, and, through Mr James Smith, congratulated Mr Mansford on Iris appointment as District Judge at Wellington. A number of complimentary speeches were made.
