A battle between the Turks and the Montenegrins is progressing. Austria fears the result of the Congress, and is rapidly mobilising. The situation is worse. Italy is restless. [eetjtee's telegrams to the peess AGENCY.] London, Juno 16. The Conservative' journals condemn the Bulgarian agreement between the Marquis of Salisbury and Count Schouvaloff. The "Daily News" considers it a satisfactory compromise. The "Times" approves of it completely. Beelin, June 16. The Turkish plenipotentiaries announce that they will withdraw from the Conference if autonamy is granted to Epirus, Thessaly, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. Vienna, June 16. Austria is increasing the mobilisation of troops. [Constantinople, June 16. The negotiations for the surrender of Varna, Schumla, and Batoum, are abandoned. [special to the peess agency.] London, Juue 17. The race for the grand Prix de Paris was ran to-day. Thursdo was first, Insulaire second, Tuvil third. The race was won by a neck. Eight ran. Fighting is resumed with Montenegro. The cause is unknown. The Austrian reserves are ordered to join to-day. ~INTERPROVINCIAL. [pee peess agency.] Fire and Loss of Life. G-beymotjth, June 18. A fire was discovered at 6.30 this morning in a four roomed cottage occupied by Mr M. Hunter, tobacconist. The fire had lull hold of the buildings when discovered. After it was extinguished the body of Mr Hunter was found dead in bed much charicd. There is no knowledge of how the fire originated. Mr Hunter was universally respected. Hokitika, June 18.
In consequence of Parliament meeting later than expected, the conference of County Councils has been postponed to August 6th at the request of many delegates who are also members of the House. Wellington, June 18. It is understood that it is the intention of the Government to call in all the arms and ammunition from the civil branch of the Constabulary throughout both Islands. An attempt is about being made to induce the Government not to sell the present Courthouse on Lambton Quay, but to convert it into a post-office, so as to allow the present Custom House buildings to be used solely for Custom House and Telegraph offices. Applications have been made for over 160,000 shares in the Colonial Insurance Company. Only 100,000 are to be allotted. The Presbyterians of Wellington intend to erect a church and school on the Adelaide road. Twenty-nine municipalities are to be represented at the Conference to be held here. The Customs authorities have offered to have all parcels of kerosene tested upon arrival, provided the Corporation rendered the necessary assistance. Dunedin, June 18. A conference is about to be held between Committees of Education Board and the School Committes to propose settling the dispute re the appointment of teachers. The " Times" this morning strong'y sup ports Mr Oliver's candidature, and says that at the preliminary meeting last night Mr Oliver expressed himself a supporter of the Government, and. also as being in favor of secular education, land tax, and manhood suffrage. The taxing officer has reduced Messrs llees and Hielop's bill of costs by £620. The Macassey and heed libel cases come on to-morrow. Mr Denniston will appear for the former and Mr Smith for the hitter.
