LICENSING COURTS.
The adjourned meeting of the Licensing Court for Christehurch was held about noon to-day. Present—G-. L. Mellish, Esq., chairman, and E. S. Harman, H. J. Tancred, and G-. L. Lee, Esqs., commissioners. NEW HOUSE. Mr Thomas produced the altered plans of the house, to be named Springston Hotel, proposed by James Mager to be erected on the main road to Southbridge. John Marshall again appeared to opposo the application, as the house was not required. Mr Thomas replied that as many as twenty pergom had had to be accommodated for the night at the place. Mr Carrie opposed the application. He could scarcely credit the assertion just made. He lived within a mile and a half of the spot, and knew of no such want of accommodation, The patronage which Mr Mager would receive would be insufficient to enable him carry on the business respectably. Mr Mager was sworn, and deposed that a boarding house was very much required. Cattle dealers and gentlemen had come up and txpre. : scd astonishment at the accommodation Mr Muir had had as many as seven for a i ight in his house. Last Sunday three had required refreshments, lla had a wholesale license, and frequeutly had been roused up at right by persons requiring brandy because they were ill. He did not get paid fur this. Another gentleman opposed J,he application, but admilted to Mr Thomas that In; did not reside at Springston nor had he any property there. The Berch, in the fac- of I be strong opposition, iciuscd the application. EENEWAIS. The following renewals, adjourr.cd from the ariMi 1 netting, were now granted, the police repoifing iV.voiabiy of the repairs made to the premises : W. Atkinson, Talbot Hotel, Y'aldhurst— Mr Atkinson was cautioned to endeavor to improve the repufatim of the house. Henry Haddrell, Musket Hotel, Colombo Utreet—Mr Thenvi* appeared for appl cant. Jamea Morgan, Hulkut Hotel, HalLel-H' 1
Thomas produced the contract for the improvements. The following applications for renewals were refused :
John Toovey, for a house at the junction of Barbadoes street and Oxford terrace. The Bench said that the refusal was simply because the spot was considered unsuitable, and not on account of any unfitness in the applicant.
Kobcrt Hamilton, Marine Hotel, Sumner. Mr Deacon appeared for Mr Morton, the owner, in support of the application. The Bench, es nothing had been done to carry out the recommendations of the- Bench, refused the application. Mr G-arrick appealed to tho Bench on behalf of the Al hotel. The delay in re-build-ing was no fault of the licensee, he was prepared to account for it by evidence on oath. The Bench could not see their way to re-open the case. BEMOVAL OF LICENSE. Joseph Mai'sden informed the Bench that lie would apply for a transfer of his license from the County Hotel to a new building to be called the Valley Hotel. The building has yet to be erected. The Bench suggested alterations in the plans produced, and said there would be no objection to the transfer. Mr Thomas appeared for the applicant.
