AUSTRALIA. Melboubne, June 12. The wreck of the Loch Ard realised at Auction yesterday £2IOO. It was purchased by Mr Frank Howarth, of Geelong. Sydney, June 12. The case New Zealand Insurance Company v. the Australian, claim £ISOO for a policy on the ship Oceanus, the verdict was for plaintiffs for the amount claimed, with interest. The defence was that the policy was overdue. Adelaide, June 11. [PBB PEESB AGENCY.] Timaed, June 12. The criminal session of the Supreme Court commenced this morning before judge Johnston. Richard Marley, for stealing from a dwelling at Waimate, was sentenced to nine months' hard labor; Elizabeth Arnold, for stealing a ring, to one month ; Margaret Neilson, for child murder, was ordered to be confined to the Lunatic Asylum during Her Majesty's pleasure. Hokitika, June 12. The election for the Assembly is causing a considerable stir. A large and influential requisition to Mr Seymour Thome George, of Wellington, with his reply, is published. Mr George promises to visit the district immediately. His candidature is supported by the "Times," which strongly opposes Mr Fitz Gerald as a candidate. It is generally supposed that the election will be keenly contested between Mr George and Mr FitzGerald. Two other candidates, Messrs S. Crombie Brown and Andrew Cumming have also announced themselves. The nomination day is the 26th of June. Dunedin, June 12.

At a meeting of the Harbor Board this morning, it was resolved that immediate steps be taken to lease all available portions of the Board's endowment. The object of the Board in carrying this resolution is to secure the Crawford street block, which may be taken by the Government in consequence of Sir J. Coode's report. In a long letter to be forwarded to the Government the Board claims to be a better judge of a proper site for the railway station than Sir J. Coode, and expresses surprise that his report is different from the verbal opinions expressed to members of the Board.

A telegram has been received from Mr Elackett stating that there is no mistake in Sir J. Ooode's report as to the portion of the reclaimed land recommended to be reserved for railway purposes. At the next meeting of the Otago Institute Mr Stout will read a paper "On the Best Method of Studying Politics."
