CHEISTCHUECH. Wednesday, June 12. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., E.M.] D»unkenness. —One first offender was fined 5s ; Mary Brown, against whom pre* vious convictions has been recorded, was fined 60s. Labceny feom a Dwelling.—Gertrude Burgess was charged with the larceny of a dress, valued at £2, the property of James Osborne. Mrs Osborne, wife of J. Osborne, a boarding house keeper at Oxford terrace west, deposed that prisoner had stayed in her house from Monday, the 4th of June, to the following Friday, when she left in consequence of witness's husband desiring her to leave. On Sunday witness missed a dress and a locket. The dress was last seen in a box on the Tuesday, and the locket was last s-en on the Thursday. Witness's husband gave information to the police. The dress produced was the same. It cost £2 10s; a jacket belonged to it. [Prisoner here said she acknowledged having taken tie dress, but she had not seen the locket.J Detective Benjamin deposed to having arrested prisoner,: who admitted siealing t'uo dress, but she had not taken the locket. He had found the dress in a washing tub. was sentenced to six months' hnpr«onment with hard labor. James Wilto« wa9 charged with stealing from the shop of Arthur Walker a muiller and a horaerug valued at 295. Inspector Hickson said there would probably be other charges against the prisoner, and asked a mnail( i till to-morrow (Thursday.) The rem*.., waß of LiCENSE.-The license of George Barlow for the Papanui Hotel was transferred to Charles Apnea. Pbotkction Act.-John George Henry was charged, on information, witn habitual drunkenness and gross crue ty towards his wife, Henrietta. Mrs Henry prayed for an order protecting her yro{ertyand earnings, according to the provisions of the Married Women's Property Protection Act. Complainant deposed to» def ndant conducting himself most violently

towards her. Defendant Baid that complainant deserved hanging. If she continued to hold him up as an exhibition to the public he would hang her up as an example. He would give her £1 a week and 8s for his wife's daughter, provided she did not earn anything. If she did she would be in a better position than himself. He earned £3 a week. He would not allow a woman to " best" him. Defendant was ordered to pay complainant £1 a week. _^__^
