The death of Samuel Bennett, proprietor of the “ Sydney Evening News,” was brought about by a slight wound inflicted on his left 1 hand with a hammer. The wound was at first considered so slight that little heed was paid to it. Inflammation, however, soon set in, followed by tetanus. Mr Berry at Portland said if the measures of constitutional reform were obstructed, a direct appeal would be made to the Imperial Parliament. Mr Longmore announced that it is intended to double the land tax, and limit the power of landowners to acquire large areas. Three cases of smallpox broke out on board the mail steamer Siam at William stown ; the patients were Lascars. The vessel is quarantined. Two hundred and fifty of Melbourne unemployed were taken on at drainage works; another lot are to be employed on the railway works at Warrenheip. There are still many left unprovided for. The Queensland Government will submit next session the question of drainage on a system applicable to all the towns of the colony. A large deposit of salt has been discovered at Herbert Downs, Queensland. Proceedings have been commenced in equity by representatives of Udolpho Wolfe against Henri J. In connection with the appointment of a new District Judge for Wellington district, it is understood that he will have to perform all the varied duties which at present devolve upon Mr Crawford, who, besides his duties in Wellington, is Resident Magistrate for the Hutt. Judge Ward and Mr Mansford are both spoken of as probable successors to Mr Crawford.
The whole of the local Press approves of Mr Clark’s drainage scheme. The rainfall since Sunday has been three inches.

The Government are going to arrange for the Wakatipu taking the Southern mails tomorrow and discharging the vessel at Lyttelton on Sunday, so that she will get to Dunedin the first thing on Monday morning. Dunedin, June 7.
An influential meeting was held here to-day re construction of a railway from Gore to Elbow', a distance of 35 miles. It was represented by several speakers that it would open up a large area of agricultural land. A company, having a capital of £150,000, was formed to carry out the work. In consequence of landslips traffic is suspended on the Otago Railway except between Port Chalmers and Mosgiel. Sir J. Coode’s report is published, but is substantially the same as telegraphed. The Board thinks that a mistake has been made by the clerk who copied the report. If so Crawford street block would not be affected. [prom the correspondent op the press.] Timaru, June 7. A meeting will be held to-morrow r morning to consider the advisability of holding Steeplechases at Timaru early next month. The movement promises to be well supported. The rain ceased entirely early this morning, and the day has been line. The rivers are all flooded, but with the exception of some railway formation being washed away at Hook no damage is reported. The hounds meet at Timaru to-morrow, but, owing to the little support accorded them last year in this district, it is not likely they will visit us again this season.
