CABLE_NEWS (special to the peess agency.) London, June 6. The Emperor’s forearm is swollen to-day. Otherwise the symptoms are favorable. A conspiracy is suspected to kill not only the present Emperor, but all the Q-erman Monarchs and Crown Princes. The Derby was won by a length and a half. INTERPROYIN CIAL, [PEB PEESS AGENCY.] Wellington, June 7. After considerable debate the City Council unanimously adopted Mr Clark's drainage scheme. A few details were objected to, but the scheme as a whole approved of. The Speaker has received a telegram from Mr Larnach, dated the 31st, tendering his resignation. It is notified that the seat is now vacant. It is stated that in all cases where the acceptance of tenders for the construction of sections of railway and other public works was postponed, pending advice from London as to the floating of the loan, the Q-overnmont have resolved to let the contracts. Dunedin, June 7. It is understod that Sir John Coode’s report is adverse to the Harbor Board, and that it recommends that that portion of the Board’s reserve which recently led to so much discussion should be set aside as a railway reserve ; also that Sir J. Coode is of opinion that the dredging operation will have an injurious effect on the bar at the heads, and otherwise.
The Commissioner of Police has had prepared a return of criminal offences in the Middle Island for the year ending 30th April last. Canterbury heads the list with 3935 offences, Otago and Southland following with 3556. Drunkenness has been the most prevelant offence in each provincial district. The “Herald” this morning states that Messrs Rees and Hislop’s bill of costs in Jones’s trial covers twenty-three pages of foolscap. In addition to the items previously telegraphed, there are the following ones re striking the jury list Attending Messrs Stout and Reed, submitting list and conferring thereon, long attendance, £1 Is.” “ Having received list from Hislop and Crengh, with instructions, perusing, &c., 6s 8d;” “attending Reed and Fenwick, conferring, 13a Id ;” “jury list having been sent, going carefully through same with you, attending you with various persons as to jurymen, £2 25.” The total amount of fees alleged to have been jaid Mr Rees is £920 13s, and the total amount to Mr T. W. Hislop £ll9 8s 6d. Among the larger items paid Mr Rees in addition to that for brief and refresher, occur the following: — ‘Paid Rcos on demurrer, sls 15s;” “Rees <j i argue demurrer, £2l j ” fee > u Wellington
Police Court, £22.” The following items also appear in the bill : —“ Instructions for brief, £52 10s; ” “Drawing brief, £75;” “ engrossing, £7O; ” “ copy for Hislop, £70.”
