BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The usual, fo; .nightly meeting of the Board of Education for North Canterbr -y was held yesterday at 3 p.m. Present —Messrs John Inglis (cha ; ’Tnan), W. Montgomery, A. Duncan, A. Saunders, Webb, and the Secretary, Mr J, Y. Colborne-Veel. Tho minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. WATURTON SIDE SCHOOL. An application was made from Longbeach for the establishment of aside school, and Mr Clark waited on the Board for of explaining the proposed cite, which he had offered free. The Board declined the application for the
present, intimating that it might bo renewed after the meeting of the Assembly. WAINUI. A deputation from the residents of Wainui waited on the Board for tho purpose of getting the present Government school removed from its present site to a more central locality. It appeared that a private school is in existence in a more central position of the district, and the residents considered it a grievance that they should have to support the Government school, which was practically closed to the children on account of the bad and dangerous road they are compelled to travel daily to reach it. In reply to the chairman, who pointed out that a considerable sum of money had been expended in the building of the Government school, a member of the deputation suggested that it, together with the ground on which it stands, might be sold, and the other site on which the private school stands purchased with the proceeds. With regard to the latter school, the representative of the inhabitants believed they would be willing to make it over to the Board free of charge, A suggestion of an allowance being made on account of having to support two schools was made, and after thanking tho Board the deputation withdrew. It was resolved to take the matter into consideration, and in the meantime to send Mr Webb to examine the locality and report to the Board. inspector's eepoets. A number of reports were read, and the chairman was authorised to act on the inspector’s recommendations. TENDERS. A number of tenders for the Board’s banking account were opened and read, and that of the Bank of Australasia accepted, as being on the most favorable terms. Tenders for supplying the Board with stationery were opened, and the decision of the Board reserved. PRESENTATION OP DIPLOMAS. An invitation to the chairman and members of the Board to he present in the Provincial Council Chamber on the occasion of the presentation of diplomas to the undergraduates of the University who gained the B A. degree at the late examination was accepted. A number of applications for various improvements and repairs to country schools were dealt with. SCHOOL TENDERS. Several tenders were opened and read for building schools at Ashburton, Oust, and Stoke. The following were accepted : —Ashburton, Messrs Short and Lear, £598 10s; Gust, George Keats, £550 conditionally j Stoke, Boyd and Keir, £152 10s. This terminated the business, and the Board adjourned.
