The “ New Zealander ” this morning announccs that the three million and a half loan has been successfully floated. The Government last night received telegraphic information that the loan had been subscribed fe r more than twice over on the first day, and that the lists would close next morning as soon as the country mails were delivered. The Government have determined to sell the present court-house on Lambton Quay, and with the money they intend to erect a new brick and far more capacious building on the reclaimed land. The libel case brought by Messrs Blundell Bros, against Mr Gardiner, of the “Chronicle,” is now being argued before the Chief Justice and Judge Richmond. Mr Travers is for the plaintiff, and the Attorney-General and Mr Edwards for the defendant. The AttorneyGeneral has raised a demurrer on the ground that the matter complained of as libellous does not admit of the interpretation put on it. Dunedin, June 5. Through traffic on the Dunedin and_ Waikouaiti line has been suspended by the injury occasioned by rainfall. A man, named Thos. Cripps, was seriously injured yesterday by falling through a cowcatcher on the Blueskin line. In consequence of the recent decision of the Resident Magistrate, the underwriters of s.s. Express, which was wrecked near Riverton some time ago, haye under their consideration the question of bringing an action for value of the vessel against the vendors of the chain which recently proved the subject of an action in the Dunedin District Court.
