At a meeting of the Timaru School Committee, it was decided to establish a high school in connection with the public school, under the terms of the Education Act, 1877, also that the compulsory clause of the Act bo brought into force. At a meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday, Messrs Guthrie and Larnach’s tender for 1000 tons of cement, at £4 16s 3d per ton, was accepted/ The annual balancesheet of the Board shows an expenditure of £1298 12s 6d ; liabilities, £4848 6s 8d i assets, £111,959 5s 5d ; leaving an excess of assets of £107,100 18s 9d. Dunedin, June 4, Mr Reid has forwarded to the Speaker his resignation as member for Taieri. Mr William Macdonald, who has been appointed Rector of the Dunedin High School, is M.A. of Edinburgh, and was one of the most eminent students of that University, having particularly distinguished himself in classics, logic, and moral philosophy.
