NEWS OF THE DAY.
Scandinavian Service— A Scandinavian service will be held to-morrow in the Durham street Wesleyan Church at 4 p.m. H. Society. —The qua»ferly meeting of this society will take place iu atPatrick’s Hall, Barbadocs street, on Thursday, Juno 6th, for the payment of quarterly fees, and nomination of officers. I. —A meeting of the Loyal Avon Lodge will be held in the Orange Hall, Worcester street, on Monday, June 3rd, at 8 p.m,, for the of ofijeere for the ensuing term.
Toting- Men’s Chbistian Association. — An Evangelistic service will be held at the Theatre Royal on Sunday evening, at 7.30. The Hon. J. Sheehan. —The Minister of Justice inspected the Lyttelton Gaol and borough schools yesterday. A holiday was given to the children attending the latter, at Mr Sheehan’s request, in honor of the Governor’s arrival.
Pekskntation to Mb Hill. —At "the Gloucester street school yesterday the boys presented their late master, Mr Hill, with a parting gift, purchased with their subscriptions. This consisted of a very handsome silver inkstand. It was accompanied by a suitable address. A High Opinion of Scholaeships.—A statement made by Dr. Turnbull at the meeting of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College held on Thursday, created some astonishment. That gentleman stated as a fact that a mercantile firm in Christchurch had refused to receive a son of one of the citizens into its employ because he had not gained a scholarship. Valuable Deaught Stock. —Messrs McGregor Bros, have purchased a valuable colt foal from Mr James Walls, of Kaiapoi. The colt is by Pride of Scotland, dam Jean, both of which are some of Mr Walls’ best stock. The price named for the youngster is said to have been £2OO.
Registbae’s Retttbns.— The registrar’s returns of births, deaths, and marriages, in Christchurch and district, in the month of May, are as follow* Births—city 42, district 120, against 56 and 122 in May, 1877. Marriages—city 25, district 8, against 31 and sin May, 1877. Deaths—city 20, district 29, against 11 and 26 in the same month of last year, City Council. —A special meeting of the City Council was held yesterday at 4 p.m. for the purpose of considering objections to the burgess roll, and to correct and certify it. The following members were present: —The Mayor, Crs. Jameson, Pratt, Radcliffe, Toomer, Bickerton, and Ruddenklau. The Mayor reported that there were no objections or claims to bo determined. It was moved by Or. Pratt, seconded by Cr. Radcliffe, and carried —“ That his Worship the Mayor and Crs. Jameson and Ruddenklau do certify to the correctness of the burgess list and sign it, and that the same shall be the burgess roll for 1878-9.” The list was accordingly signed and certified.
Expoeted Stock. —On Thursday, Mr Flint, of Sunningdale Farm, Pokeno, Auckland, took with him per s.s. Taranaki the fine six-year-old bull Student of Oxford, purchased by him from Mr Newton. Student of Oxford is a fine specimen of the well-known Mince Pie’s stock, and will no doubt be highly approved of in the Auckland district. Slaughteehouse Licenses. —The fee for slaughterhouse licenses, which are now issued by County Councils, has been fixed at £l. The tees for slaughtering cattle will be 3d per head for large cattle; 3d per dozen for all small cattle, but where more than ICO head of small cattle are slaughtered in any one week, the fee will be 2d per dozen. Under the Act of last session all applications for slaughterhouse licenses were to be sent to the Council of the county in which the applicant proposes it shaU be, and not as heretofore to the Resident Magistrates’ Courts. Methodist Fees Chueoh. —The anniversary of the Methodist Free Church Sunday School, St. Asaph street, will be celebrated to-morrow and Tuesday. There will be sermons preached to-moirow forenoon and evening, and in the afternoon a public meeting will be held, when addresses will be delivered to parents and teachers, scholars, and to fsupporters. The anniversary tea meeting will be held on Tuesday. New Hotel. —Mr Toovey, who has applied for a license at the forthcoming licensing meeting, intends, if it is granted, erecting a large and commodious hotel at the corner of Barbadoes street and Oxford terrace. The plans show that the hotel will be commodious and well appointed. The accommodation includes twenty bedrooms, six sitting-rsoms, dining-rooms, and two bathrooms. tain fifty rooms. Coubsing Club. —The adjourned meeting of the stewards of the late coursing match was held yesterday afternoon at the Shades. Present—Mr W. G. Walker, in the chair, and Messrs Bishop, Porter, and Anson. The secretary reported that Mr Taylor had not forwarded the apology required from him. Mr Bishop moved—“ That in accordance with rule 27 Mr Taylor be fined the minimum sum, £2.” Mr Anson seconded the motion, which was unanimously agreed to. This concluded the business of the meeting.
Wipe Deseetion. —The case of wife desertion previously alluded to, was dealt with at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. Later in the day Mrs Chapman was offered by Mr J. E. Marsh the option of being admitted to the Home or being attended to at the house of Mr Debois, the neighbour who had already befriended her. She elected to continue with Mr Debois, who will be allowed £1 a week for her maintenance, which amount Chapman will be compelled to pay.
