THE POLICY OF SIR G. GREY AND THE GREY MINISTRY.
To the Editor of the Globe.
Sir, —In your editorials of Friday and Saturday you have called particular attention to the difference of policy existing in the Grey Ministry, and would lead us to believe that because Mr Ballance differs from his chief’s policy, Mr Ballance’s policy is therefore the Government one. We have heard before of Ministers resigning because their policy was not in accord with the rest of the Cabinet, and can see no reason why he cannot do the same. Sir George Grey, as Premier of New Zealand, has distinctly stated that lie is opposed to plurality of voting, and gave good reasons why it ought to be abolished j while Mr Ballance, on his part, gave no explanation why it should be retained, except perhaps as a piece of class legislation. It is, therefore, premature on your part to ask the thousands, who gave their entire support to the policy of Sir George, to believe that his policy was mere clap-trap. When they have the Government measures laid before the House of Representatives, then will they be able to judge accurately for themselves. Hoping you will find room for the above, I am, &c., JAMES FRASER. Willow Bank, Sydenham. [We have the asurance of Mr Ballance himself that the policy announced by him at Marton is that adopted by the Cabinet, for after giving an outline of the new Ministerial Bill, which includes a property qualification and plurality of voting, he said “ the proposal for an extension of the suffrage has been put in a concrete form, and showed the opinion of the Ministry on the point.” Either, therefore, Mr Ballance has been deliberately asserting what is untrue, or Sir G. Grey’s utterances were mere clap-trap. [Ed. Globe.]
