Eight hours has been fixed by the United States Congress as a day’s labour on Government works. A commission of the Russian Geographical Society is busily engaged upon a work illustrating the geography, ethnography, and statistics of Asiatic Russia, to be published in 1879, the tercentenary of Yermak’s bold invasion ofgSibetia. The Council General of the Seine has adopted a resolution in favor of the razing of the ruins of the Tuileries, the only dissentient being M. Viollett le Due, who urged that the palace might be restored for 460,000 f. and used as a museum and for popular lectures. The resolution is strongly supported by the “ Republic Franoaiso.” ’ Professor Staxich, the celebrated Paiestiniax Aukist, who has been so successful in Australia and Otago, has arrived in Christchurch, and can be consulted at the Commercial Hotel from 10 a.m. to 4 pin. daily. Professor Stanich has with him numbers of testimonials from influential pi rsons in every town that he has visited, testifying to the wonderful cures effected by him in diseases of the car. Persons desirous of consulting him would do well to do so at once. — [Advt.]
