ON GUARD.

An hour after midnight the other night a policeman discovered a resident of Watson street sitting on his front door step with a big club across his knees, Puzzled at the situation, the officer made some inquiries, and the citizen answered : ' My dog died to-day, and it's my so as to make a raid on the house tonight.' ' Why, you haven't anything for 'em to steal,' said the officer, who knew that the family had been supported by the poormaster all winter. 'Haven't, eh!' replied the man in an injured voice—' didn't I bring home a hull cod fish and two tea store chromos this forenoon?' He still continued on guard as the officer passed along.
