The Chancellor of the Exchequer in his Budget speech, shows an excess of revenue of £860,000; ordinary expenditure for the year, £81,000,000; revenue, £70,000,000. The deficit is to be met by twopence per pound extra income tax, fouvpence per pound on tobacco ; and by raising the dog tax to 7s 6d. Allcourt, a Conservative, was returned for Manchester, defeating Lycett, the Liberal candidate, by ">OO votes. The revenue returns show an increase of £1,000,000 on the March quarter of 1877. At a salo of pictures, nine of Turner's paintings fetched 41,500 guineas, and twelve water color drawings, 16,000 guineas. The Admiralty Court accorded £2OOO for the salvage of Cleopatra's needle. The herring fishery on tho east coast of Scotland is likely to prove a failure, owing to the unsettled relations between England and Russia. The results are likely to be deplorable in Wick and other towns.
