BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Board of Education for North Canterbury held an adjourned meeting yesterday at ?> r.m. Present-Messrs John [nglis (chairman), Vef; Montgomery, Webb, Saundpra, Tauered, f luncan, and Bowen. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. APPOINTMENT. On the recommendation of tho examiners, the Board granted Mi s Sully a third class certificate. LITTLE RIVER. An apnlication was received f>om this school for a cabinet of object lessons and models. The Board granted the request. inspector's reports. The Inspector reported on the following schools;— Stpke, Fernsido, Eyroton, Kaiapoi
Island North, Kaiapoi Island school, New Brighton, and North road. CLASS BOOKS. The following class books, maps, diagrams, Ac , were, on tne recommendation of Mr Howard, of the Normal school, adopted by the Board for the use of schools under its control: — Philips' World on Mereator's projection, Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge British Islands, do. Europe, Philips' Australasia, Betio's Portable Globe (Philips'). Diagrams—Bneon's Pictorial Illustrations_ of Geography, Natural Bistory Diagrams, Oliver and Boyd's object lesson cards. For infants — Clock face, box of alphabets, ball frame. Large schools—Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge : England, Scotland, Ireland, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Johnston's United States, Dominion of Canada, India, Johnston's Illustration of Mechanical Powers, or Models. Special Science Instruction—Johnston's Illustrations of Botany, Anatomy, Natural Philosophy, Properties of Bodies and Hydrostatics, or Twim'ng's Science Made Easy, Hydraulics, Steam Engines, Reynold Diagrams, Thermometer and Barometer, Steam Engine, Hydraulic Press, Gas Meter, Printing Press, Clock. There were no specimens of the maps of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, but they were considered best for general purposes. Philips' were next best to these. Hanford's Orographical and Physical, Johnston's School Board for Political. SCHOOL DISCIPLINE. After some discussion on the subject of punishment in schools, it was resolved that for the future corporal punishment should only be inflicted by the head master. STOKE. An application was received for the sanction of the Board to certain improvements and repairs to the school house. The matter was referred to the architect. TINWALD AND ASHBURION. The Board decided to proclaim the district of Tinwald, and to re-proclaim Ashburton to suit the boundaries of the new district ; also to reproclaim tho former district of South Ashburton under the name of Willoughby. MALVERN. The Board decided to set apart a sum of money for repairs. WEST CHRISTCHURCH. In answer to the application for the sanction of the Board to certain expenditure connected with this school, the Board decided that for the present they could not grant the request. LINCOLN. Application was made for certain repairs to be done at a cost of ,£B2. The Boird decided to allow .£27 for the purpose. AKAROA. The question of a site for the school was discussed, and deferred for a future occasion. NORMAL SCHOOL. The question of ventilating the Normal School was discussed. Mr Montgomery thought that the object might be properly and economically accomplished by an alteration of the upper portion of the windows, and by having ventilators in the floor. The consideration of the matter was eventually handed over to the committee to make preliminary experiments with one room at first. MISCELLANEOUS. The Board decided to allow the cost of fencing the school ground at Opawa under certain restrictions The expenditure of £G ss, for deepening a well at the Robinson's Bay school was sanctioned. It was resolved that Mr Saunders should confer at an early date with Mr Beswick relative to a site for the school in Tinwald district. An application was made for ,£l7 10s 6d towards fencing in the schoolground at Mount Grey Downs. The Board sanctioned tho expenditure. The sum of =£7 15s was allowed to the Lyttelton School for the erection of a fire-guard for the protection of the younger children. Application was made for an additional classroom to the Oust School, but the Board did not consider the attendance warranted it. Some necessary repairs were allowed. The Board authorised the calling for tendci-s. The Board agreed to tho expenditure of ,£2O for tho purpose of erecting a shed and chimney at Broadfields.
A discussion took place as to the proposed site of a school at Dunsandel.
A 1 tter was received from Mr Wright, chairman of the Selwyn school committee, objecting to the pi*oposed site, and the Board ultimately decided to abandon their original decision on the matter, and to confer with the Selwyn school committee on the question of the site. The Board also thought it would be desir.ble if the Selwyn school committee obtained an expression of opinion on the point from the inhabitants both of Selwyn and Dunsandel. The Board fixed upon the boundaries of the Aylesbury district, and resolved to Jproclaim it, unless some substantial objections were raised against it. This terminated the business, and the Board adjourned to the 6th of June.
