NEWS OF THE DAY.
Shipping.—The New Zealand Shipping Company (Limited) have received cable advice of the arrival of their ship Otaki at London from Port Chalmers, all well. The County Confebence. —The Hutt County Council has accepted the proposal of "Westland for a County Conference, and appointed a delegate. Riocabton. —The Eiccarton Road Board have advertised their intention of striking a sixpenny road rate for the period ending 31st December. Sebious Loss.—We regret to learn that the Middle Park Company have sustained a severe loss in the death of the yearling filly from Maria Theresa by Traducer. New By-law.—A special meeting of the City Council will be called early in June to adopt the new by-law regulating the sale of kerosene and dangerous goods. New Jetty at Lyttelton.—The Lyttelton Ilarbor Board call for tenders for the construction of a jetty 400 ft. in length in Lyttelton harbor. Justice of the Peace.—ln the last New Zealand " Gazette" Mr John Thomas Matson, Papanui, is appointed a Justice of the Peace for the colony. Cabmen's Licenses. —The licenses of the two cabmen implicated in the recent reincutting case in Gloucester street investigated in the R.M. Court, were last night cancelled by the City Council. The Cable Confeeence.—At the quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday, regret was expressed that the colony of New Zealand was not represented by delegate at the Cable Conference recently concluded in Melbourne.
Cessation of Public Woeks. —A very important telegram, to the effect that the Government has announced its inability to undertake further liabilities for public works, is published this evening. The reason given is that the European war prevents the floating of the new loan.
Eire Bbigadb.—lmportant suggestions were made in two letters from Mr Superintendent Harris, which were last night road at the sitting of the City Council, referring to improvements in the means for suppression of fire. The letters will be considered by the Fire Brigade committee. Cheviot Elections. —At the election for Cheviot on Friday the whole number of votes polled was 163. This was nine less than at the election in 1876, when Mr Harper obtained 95 against Mr "Ward's 77, making a total of 172. The number of electors on the roll for the year 1875-6 was 235. The Paris Exhibition. —Mr Hassal, at the quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, asked whether the Government had been urged by the Chamber to appoint a representative for New Zealand at the Paris Exhibition. The chairman stated that the Government had informed the Chamber that the Assembly not having voted any money for the purpose no such appointment had been made.
Mabine Enquiry.—A preliminary enquiry into the damage done to the W. C. Wentworth, Omaha, and Enterprise, during the gale on Thursday last, was commenced yesterday at the Custom House, Lyttelton, before A. Rose, Esq., Collector of Customs, and Captain "Worster, Nautical Assessor, Mr H. N. Nalder watching the case on behalf of the owners of the Enterprise. The evidence of tho master and mate of the W. C. Wentworth was taken, and the inquiry adjourned till to-day. Reductions in the Civil Sebvice. —It is stated in the Wellington papers that as soon as Ministers are all in Wellington very extensive reductions in the Civil Service will be made. It is said that considerably over 100 officers and clerks will receive notice that they are no longer required. Among the departments in which important alterations will be effected, the Treasury, Audit, Stamp, and Native Departments may be mentioned. The Colonial Insueance Company.— The demand for shares in this company in Wellington is such that to prevent grumbling, and to reassure applicants in other parts of tho colony, the share list, in Wellington only, were closed yesterday, the 20th instant. It is the desire of the directors to convince other parts of the colony that the shares will bo divided proportionately amongst tho different districts.
Grand National Steeplechase.—The sale of right of erecting booths, &c, at the forthcoming steeplechase meeting took place yesterday at Kadcliffe's Hotel, Mr damps Campbell officiating as auctioneer. The new stand brought £29, MrPoolo being the purchaser ; No. 1 publicans' booth, £l9, Mr Poole; confectioner's booth, £5, Mr Poole ; right of sports, £7, Mr Goodwin; horse yards, £2 10s, Mr Browne. The total proceeds of the sale amounted to £62 10s. Wkst Coast Mail. —The mail from the West Coast, which should have reached town on Saturday afternoon, did not arrive till yesterday morning, having been delayed by the severe weather on the other side of the ranges. The Taipo river was impassable for some hours, and a portion of the road in the Otira Gorge was carried away by] an avalanche. Eepairs were done in a remarkably rapid manner through the energy of Mr T, Power, the well-known driver of the mail.
Footbael.—The committee of the Christchurch Football Club met last night, and after careful consideration and much discussion selected the following team to represent the club in the match to be played against a team from Timaru, on Thursday afternoon next:—Messrs A. H. Anderson, W. H. Alack. C. Bolton, E. J. Cotterill, J. R. Evans, W. HarMand, W. V. Million, J. Millton, A. M. Ollivier (captain), L. M. Ollivier, W. Potts, T. Ross, M. Smith, W. Stringer, and J. Wilkin. Emergency —J. Field, G. S. Mathias, E. A. Pavitt, and W. P. Reeves. Any of the above who may be unable to plav are requested to communicate with the secretary (Mr L. M. Ollivier) as soon as possible.
