A member of the Temperance Association memorialised the Board of E Incation to make arrangements for teaching children the beauty of temperance and the evil of alcohol. In the Court of Appeal, in the case Regina v Simmons, a Christchurch case, Mr Chapman appeared for the prisoner. The Crown was not represented. Judgment was reserved. Oamaeu, May 17. Although grain is being delivered freely, tbe breadstuffs market is inactive. Prime milling wheat is worth 4s ; oafs, 3s to 3s 4d ; good malting barley, 5s ; flour, £H to £1 5« fob.; oatmeal, £lB ; pearl barley, £2O; pollard, £5 5s ; bran, £4. Dunedin, May 17. The directors of the Colonial Bank of N ew Zealand, at their meeting yesterday, resolved to offer to tbe existing proprietors, at a premium of 10s per share, the unallotted balance of the first issue of 200,000 shares, about 35,000, in the proportion of one to every five shares now lu Id. The whole of the premium to be placed to reserve fund. [from the correspondent of the press J Timaru, May 17. A heavy north-westerly gale set in at noon to-day, and continued fill seven o’clock, when it veered to south east, from which quarter it is now blowing. Many stacks have been blown down and minor damage done in the town. The McKenzie country is covered with snow, and great fears are entertained about the sheep. Tbe Chamber of Commerce held a special meeting to day, when the reply from the Government re grain tariff' was received, and caused great indignation. There is very strong feeling against Mr Conyers, who is spoken of as a tout for Christchurch grain merchants. Further joint steps hy the Dunedin, Oamaru, and Timaru chambers are to be taken immediately. The Government intend proclaiming the foreshore hero for railway station purposes, and as it it vested in the Harbor Board hy Act of Parliament, there will probably be opposition to it. If the Government pursued such a course they would deprive the Harb"r Board of its principal source of revenue, viz., tho laud which they themselves would reel dm by means of the mole. It wjuld also entirely prevent two of tho landing services from working, and ruin the slopping trade, which the Government seem bent on doing by every possible means.
