INTERPROYINCIAL. [PEE PBKPB AGBNfIT.] Wellington, May 17. The Port Darwin line is interrupted north of Charlotte Waters, Communication was restored on the Tasmanian cable yesterday evening. Considerable anxiety is felt here regarding the steamers Storrabird, Tui, and the Govern ment steamer Stella, which left here ou Saturday and Sunday. The Stella left for Taranaki on Saturday, the Stormbird for Wanganui on Sunday, and the Tui for Foxton on the same clay. Neither appears to have reached its destination yet, though the St, Kilda and Manawatu have left for Wanganui since. As a, vessel has arrived from Queen Charlotte Sound, and reports that she sighted no steamers taking shelter, anxiety has naturally been aroused. Sir John Coode left in the Hinemoa for Napier to-day. Hokitika, May 17. Mr Button addressed the electors last night. He expressed his views strongly against the Grey Government, and announced that he would oppose Sir George Grey on all Ministerial questions, and, as he believed the constituency was favourable to the Grey Ministry, he had no desire to represent a minority. It was moved “That the thanks of the meeting be accorded for past services, and (hat this meeting has every confidence in him for the future.” To this an amendment was moved to the following effect: —“That after Mr Bntion’s political views expressed tonight, whilst having the highest respect for Mr Button’s able and conscientious services in the past, this meeting is of opinion that the sympathies of this coi stitency would be better represented, were it represented by a supporter of Sir George Grey.” The amendment being put was daclared carried by a large majority. It is certain after the result of the meeting that Mr Button will resign. New Plymouth, May 17. The Stella, with Judge Gillies on board, has left for Wellington.
