MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thdhsday, May 16. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunk Disoedkely. —Thomas Hind Top pin and H, Beaumont, against -whom previous convictions hud been recorded, were fined 20s and 60s respectively. Two first offenders were fined 5s each. Nuisance. —Samuel Dennis, poulterer, was summoned for that certain pigstyes, kept upon land situate in Wakefield road and occupied by him, being part of rural section 6 and 52 within the district of the Christchurch Drainage Board, were in such a state as to be a nuisance or injur.ous to health. Mr Cowlishaw appeared for the Local Board of Health. D fend ant did not appear. Mr Pearce, inspector of nuisances, deposed to finding a dozen to fifteen pigs on the premises of defendant. The styes were not properly constructed. From time to time complaints of the nuisance had been made to the Board ly r.-idenis in the neighborhood. Witness had s-tve i a notice on the defendant -in accordance with the Act. Witness had inspect# i th • premises fourteen days after serving the notice aud found that no effectual measures
o abate the nuisance had been made. A resident in the neighborhood described .the,smell from the premises as a serious nuisance, “ perfectly dreadful.” The Court made an order that the defendant comply with the requisitions of the notice within fourteen days of the service of this order, and that he pay the cost of the day’s proceedings, 27s 6d.
