Frank \prnstead was charged with being the occupant of a house frequented by persons having no lawful visible means of support. It was proved in evidence that on the 23rd April prisoner had been brought before the Court on a similar charge and had then been discharged on cond (ion that he would leave the city. He was sent to prison for three months with hard labor. Wife Desertion.— Samuel Badbam, on remaud, was charged with having deserted his wife. The information had been laid in 1876, but the warrant was executed only a week ago. Mr Thomas appeared for prisoner. In consequence of the absence of Mr Meliish this case and several others were adjourned till three o’clock.

Samuel Lindsay was fined 10s. A case against Robert Beattie was adjourned for a day.

Assault. William Mulholland was charged, on information, with assaulting David Douglas. Mr Thomas appeared for the defendant. Complainant applied for an adjournment for a week, as he desired to obtain the evidence of a witness. Mr Thomas objected that the information had been laid on the Bth of May, and there had been ample time for the obtaining of evidence. The Bench allowed the case to stand over for half an hour, for the attendance of complainant’s solicitor. Frederick Peiper was charged with assaulting S. Strong, on the 2nd of May, at Lyttelton. Mr Izard appeared for complainant, who deposed to the assault having been committed in consequence of his being unable to pay defendant some money which he owed. Defendant admitted the charge, but said he had been greatly provoked. He expressed surprise at the charge having now been brought, as, subsequently to the assault, he had apologised to the complainant, and they had had a glass of brandy together. The Bench inflicted a fine of £2, and expenses 25s 4d, Robert Reynolds was charged with assaulting John Hill, by kicking him, on the Bth of May. Mr Thomas appeared for defendant, Mr Izard for complainant. The Bench considered the evidence so conflicting that they dismised the case. The case of David Douglas v Mullbolland was adjourned till the 20th May, expenses to be paid by the complainant, Windsor Knight was charged with assaulting John Burns on the 3rd May. Mr Izard appeared for complainant, who deposed to the assault, which consisted of two|knock-down blows. The evidence in the case was very conflicting. The Bench considered the assault proved, and fined defendant 40s and costs 16s 6d.
Damaging Property.— James Lynch, a cabman, was charged with damaging a set of reins, the property of John Gomersall, another cabman, by cutting them through with a knife. Mr Thomas appeared for complainant. The offence was said to be committed on the stand opposite the Criterion. For the defence, William Anderson was called, who swore that he saw two boys cut the reins and run away. Witness did not run after them or give any alarm. Did not tell plaintiff that his reins had been cut. The Bench considered the charge proved and fined defendant £5 and costs 19s. They said they would report to the City Council the conduct of defendant, and also call attention to the evidence of the defendant’s witness. Both men they considered utterly unfit to hold drivers’ licenses.
LYTTELTON. Tuesday, May 14. [Before W. Donald, E-q., R.M.] Teansfeb of License. —An application of the trustees in the insolvent estate of W. D’Anthreau, to allow Mr Patrick O’Brien to hold the license of the Empire Hotel to tho 30th of Jnne next, was granted.
