It is expected that Russia will issue letters of marque in the United States in the event of war. Washington, May 3. Fenian agents are active in the United States. Athens, May 7. The clannish insurrectionary movements in Thessaly and Macedonia has ceased, through British mediation. St. Peteksbubg, May 7. The desire for peace is increasing. Todleben shortly retires, and will live at Tchamaldwa. Constantinople, May 7. The Russians offer to retire to a straight line of demarcation with Adrianople if the British ironclad squadron is withdrawn. The insurrectionary movement in Roumelia increases.

He defended the Atkinson Government. A vote of confidence was passed. Dxtnedin, Mayjl2. The question of teaching science in elementary schools was discussed by the Educational Instituto yesterday. Professors Black, Ma<Gregor, Hutton, and several others spoke. A diversity of opinion prevailed as to the desirability of such an innovation, and Professor MucGregor said that to attempt to teach science in such schools would do unmitigated mischief.
