Court op Appeal. —His Honor Mr Justice Johnston left yesterday for Wellington, to attend the sittings of the Court of Appeal. Lyttelton Drains. —The odours from the Lyltelton sewers yesterday were simply abominable, and certainly something should be done to abate the nuisance. Drainage Board Election. —Wednesday, the 22nd May, has been fixed as the day for the election of a new member of the above Board for the south-east portion of the city. Voluntekr Inspeotion.—The officer commanding the district will inspect the Christch'irch Artillery, the Canterbury Engineers, and the Ciy Guards on Wednesday, May 15th, at 7.30 p.m. The Randwick Races.—The settling oyer the.-e races was satisfactory. The total amount paid over was £7378. The Hon. Jnmes White was the principal winner, with £1681; Mr DeMesfcre, £1181; Mr A. Town, £846 ; Mr K. Power, £779; Sir Hercules Robinson, £570. Property Sale.—Mr Charles Clark held a sale of property at his rooms yesterday, when the following lots were sold :—Six quarteracre sections on the North town belt, average £205 each ; eleven quarter-acre sections in the township of Coalgate at average £9 each. On the 16th Mr Clark will sell twenty farms on the River Styx, being a sub-division of Mr S. Bealey's property. C.Y.C. AT Ashburton. —The cavalry seem to be in earnest about their work. This morning they paraded for dismounted drill, and, headed by the band, nmrchrd through the town. Afterwards they went through the manual and platoon exercise, under command of Lieut. Slater. At 2 30 the troop rode out to the parade ground, and were exercised in various cavalry movements under Captain Strouts. A meeting was to be held last evening to arrange for holding cavalry races previous to the departure of the troop, and today it is probable that a football match may come off, sides to be chosen from the members of the corps. Imported Horses. A nurrbir of thoroughbred horses arrived by the Wa'iatipu from Sydney and Napier yesterday. They comprise Papapa, the well-known stud horse, and two colts, one by Traducer (Renja), and the other by Tim Whiiller. The two latter are the property of Mr R. Farmer, and go to the Bush Inn for their preparation. Papapa will also stand at the Bush Inn 6tables during the ensuing season. By the same steamer also arriyed the celebrated colt, bought by the Middle Park Company, by Yattendr n— Lady Chester, for which 1300 guineas was pad at Mr E. K. Cox's sale at Sydney lately. Harbour Board.—A meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board was held yesterday. The business transacted was of a somewhat routine character. An answer was received from the Government as to the defence of Lyfctelton Harbour, stating that the matter was under the consideration of the Government. The annual meeting of the Board was fixed to take place on June 3rd, at noon. Poultry Association. —A general meeting of the members of this association was held last night at Ra del iff e's Hotel, but the attendance was small; Mr W. C. Hill was voted to the chair. A discussion took place on the question of the association importing stock from England and selling it here. Mr Walker thought that perhaps a better plan would be for the association to undertake the purchase in England of any stock that members might order, the association to advance the money on the guarantee of the member giving the order. He also thought that the members would prefer to pay the amount of their order by monthly instalments. The meeting was adjourned to the 16th inst., to enable all members favorable to the scheme to submit their orders in writing to the secretary, such orders to be considered on the 16th inst.
