CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, May 8. [Before G. L. Melliah, Esq , R.M.J Drunk and Disorderly. —William Lee, Thomas Holmes, John Moore, and James Johnston were fined 5s each ; John Williams, against whom .here were twenty-nine previous convictions, and who begged hard for “another chance,” was fined 10s; Johanna Gallagher, alias Connor, who was complimented by the Bench for “ having kept out of sight for a week,” was fined 40s. Stealing Tools. —Charles James was charged with stealing a quantity of carpenters’ tools, the property of Joseph Leatherick. On the application of Inspector Hickson he was remanded till to-morrow. Deserting his Child.— Henry Reedman was charged with being about to desert an illegitimate child of which he is the putative father. Mr Joynt appeared for the complainant, who was unable to attend, asked for an affiliation order, and that the respondent might be compelled to find security. Respondent had admitted the paternity, but had threatened that if proceedings were taken against him he would abscond. The case was ordered to be postponed till the afternoon. Respondent, however, admitting in court that he was the father of the child, the Bench called upon him to find sureties for £SO, and made an order for the payment of 7s 64 per week. Respondent said he was not able to find security. The Bench said the alternative would be six months imprisonment. The case was adjourned to give him time to make arrangement. Subsequently he appeared in court and announced that he had found the necessary security. Abusive Language —Thomas Holmes was charged with having used abusive language to Elizabeth Allen, of the Golden Age. John Brooks proved the offence. Defendant pleaded ignorance of the affair, as he was drunk at the time. He was fined 20s and costs 9s Gd,
