Sydney, May 3. The New Zealand bull Duke of Cambridge has been sold for 420 guineas, and the Duke of Newcastle has been reserved at two thousand guineas. Melbourne, May 4. At billiards last night, 750 up, Roberts gave Shorter 175, and was beaten by 363.

[per press agency.] New Plymouth, May 4. Sir John Coode, with the chairman and engineer of the Harbor Board and others, visited the site of the harbor this afternoon. He was rowed round Moturoa-Barrett’s reef, and along where tho proposed breakwater is to bo placed and then to the shore. He goes to Waitara to-morrow, and will probably proceed southwards by Tuesday’s coach. Dunedin, May 4.

Strong efforts are being made by the Taieri settlers to induce Mr Keid still to represent them in Parliament.

Dr. Somerville and son arrived in Dunedin last night, and were received by a number of the United Evangelical Committee and leading laymen of the town. At last night’s meeting of the Dunedin School Committee, Rev. Dr. Copland and Dr. Stuart applied for tho use of the class-rooms in the Dunedin public schools on Saturdays for the purpose of opening classes for the instruction of the children in tho Christian religion. The desirability of granting the application was questioned by some members of the committee, and its consideration was postponed. The “Morning Herald” appeared in full size to-day. The opening meeting of the Metropolitan Coursing Club took place at Palmerston yesterday. The attendance of spectators was large, and tho events were well contested.
