MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, April 2. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.] Larceny of a Coat. —James Wilton was charged with stealing a coat from the door of Messrs Candy and Dewsbury’s shop, Colombo street. Benjamin Hawkins, carter, stated that about four o’clock the previous afternoon he saw accused standing in front of the prosecutor’s shop. After a few minutes accused took a coat that was hanging at the door, and immediately went round the corner along Gloucester street. Witness went as far as the post-office and told a policeman. Constable Daley deposed to following the direction taken by accused, and arresting him at the corner of Cashel street and the terrace. Accused was carrying the coat produced, and said that he had not stolen it, but that it had been “ slung” to him. Mr Candy identified the coat produced as his property. It was hanging outside the shop door when last he saw it. It had not been sold to any one. Valued it at £2 12s 6d. Accused had nothing to say, and was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. LYTTELTON. Thursday, May 2. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.] Absent Without Leave. —Henry Stavin, a seaman belonging to the charged by Captain Powell, of that vessel, with the above offence, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. Cattle Trespass. —W. Armilage, for having a horse astray, was fined 5s and 4s costs.
