BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETINGS.
THE RETIRING BOARD. The members of the Board of the Education District of Canterbury held their final meeting yesterday afternoon in the Board-room at the Normal School. Present—Mr Ingli3 (chairman), and Messrs Montgomery, Duncan, Rolleston, Tancred, and Webb. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the chairman's report of expenditure and appointments made since the last meeting was approved. A number of contracts were sealed and certificates of promotion issued. The chairman's plan of distribution of the libraries' grant was adopted. Mr Rolleston moved, and Mr Montgomery seconded, the following—" That the Board desires to place on record its appreciation of the indefatigable exertions of its chairman, Mr Inglis, during the whole period of its existence as a Board, and of the ability and courtesy with wh : ch he has discharged hi 3 duties." Mr Webb heartily endorsed the resolution, which was unanimously agreed to. The Chairman, in acknowledging the compliment, referred to the appreciation of the policy of the Board, shown by the fact cf the election to the new Board of all the members who offered themselves as candidates. The minutes of the meeting were then read and confirmed, and the meeting closed.
NORTH CANTERBURY BOARD. The members of the new Board of education for North Canterbury held their first meeting yesterday afternoon at the Board room. Present—Messrs Inglis, Montgomery, Duncan, C. C. Bowen, Tancred, Rolleston, Webb, and Saunders. Mr Habens having read the correspondence from Wellington advising him to advertise the meeting, called upon the Board to elect their chairman. Mr Montgomery proposed, and Mr Tancred seconded, the election of Mr John Inglis. The motion was unanimously agreed to. Mr Inglis, on taking the chair, referred to the unanimity which had characterised the proceedings of the former Board, and expressed a hope that the same unanimity would be shown by the present Board. The next business was the election of a Commissioner of Education Reserves to represent the Board. On the motion of Mr Bowen, seconded by Mr Montgomery, Mr Duncan was elected Commissioner. It was decided to hold the U3ual teachers'
examination in June. A letter from the Inspector-General's office •was read. It referred among other things to the issue shortly of a list of authorised books, and said that probably all books now in use would be included, with the exception of some to which objection had been taken. Mr Bowen hoped there would be no rule excluding the adoption of any new book which might be considered a desirable one, even though it was not on the list. The Chairman sUted that the late Board had entered into negotiations with Mr J. ColborneVeel as to his accepting the post of secretary to the new Board. That gentleman had signified his willingness to accept the office if appointed. Mr Duncan proposed— ' That Mr ColborneVeel be elected secretiry to this Board." Mr Webb seconded the proposal. The motion was unanimously agreed to, with the understanding that the appointment should date from the Ist June, the salary and duties being the satie as those of Mr Habens. The Board resolved to ask Professor Cook to act as examiner for scholarships, and to act on the Board of Examiners. A request from the West Christchurch committce was read, to the effect that the pupils attending the Normal School should be credited to the district. It was decided that, in futuro returns the Board, though not recognising any connection between the committee and the Normal School, would show that the Normal School is located in the West Chr'stchurch district ; and further, the committee were informed that they were not, and were not likely to be, affected financially by the matter referred to. It was resolved to send an inspector to the Kaikoura Town and suburban schools. The secretary stated that there was to the credit of the scholarships' account a sum of .£4BOO. In addition to this the Board's share of the Government grant for scholarships was ,£2OO A nnmber of reports from st-hools were laid upon the table. , After the transaction of a large amount ot departmental business the meeting closed.
