Auckland, April 26. _ The Governor met with an enthusiastic reception on his arrival at Hokianga, and was entertained at luncheon by the principal residents. The Telegraphist and two French vessels fired a salute of twenty-one guns. All the vessels were decorated, and there was a splendid display of fireworks. The Governor has gone to Mr Webster’s place at tho heads. The Auckland Jockey Club have disqualified McGee, owner, from running horses on tho Auckland turf. McGee, jun., the jockey, was suspended for twelve months for alleged pulling of Falcon in the Selling Race. Tho resolution is to be forwarded to tho Southern clubs.
Alexandba, April 26. Several canoe loads.of flour, sugar, etc., have gone up to Hikurangi to-day. A large number of natives are assembled at the falls here. The lower Waikato natives are expected to-morrow in four war canoes. It is doubtful if Rewi will be present at the meeting, unless Wahanui consents to attend. If so Ngatimaniopoto will have a meeting with Sir George Grey after Tawhiao’s meeting. Sir George Grey is expected here on Monday. Tho meeting will bo a large one. • Wanganui, April 26,
Henry Fisher and Walter Coker, storekeepers, at Palmerston north, charged with conspiring to defraud their creditors, have been tried at the Supreme Court. The case lasted two days. The jury returned a verdict of “ Guilty” on all the counts. Sentence was deferred till Saturday. Wellington, April 26, _ In to-day’s “ Gazette” it is notified that, in terms of the resolution of the House of Representatives, the Government will give a bonus of £SOOO for the first 500 tons of marketable sugar from beet grown in the North Island, and a like sum for the same quantity made in the Middle Island. Reporters for the press will not be allowed to be present at the forthcoming Native meeting at Hikurangi, but an arrangement will be made for supplying the papers with the result of the proceedings.
