ELLESMERE RACES.
Thursday, April 18. Stewards—Messrs J. Wallace, J. B. Smith, D. Kellahan, D. Todd, D. Tushock, D. Cameron, and S. Lemon. Judge—Mr W. Bishop. Starter—Mr D. Tushock. These races took place as above, and were well attended, the weather being very fine and the racing good. The following is an account of the various events : Maiden Plate of 15 sovs., for all horses that have never won an advertised race exceeding dSIS value. Weight for age. U miles. Mr W. J. Lemon’s g m Miss Brizzle, 3 yrs, Bst (Honor) 1 Mr J. Bradshaw’s b m Lady Heron, aged, 9st 81b ... ... ... (Fuller) 2 Mr i\ Rowe’s b g Strike-a-Light, 4 yrs, 9st, (Osborne) 0 Mr Bryan’s b f Lady Caledon, 2 yrs, Bst ... 0 Mr D. Keilahan’s ch g King Philip, 3 yrs, Bst 0 A very good start was effected, all getting away on even terms. Strike-a-Light cut out the running, closely followed by Lady Heron and Miss Brizzle, and King Philip, Miss Caledon bringing up the rear. After about a quarter of a mile had been gone, Honor took Miss Brizzle to the front, King Philip taking second place from Lady Heron, the rest together in rear. On coming to the turn Lady Heron improved her position taking second place, Miss Brizzle still holding the lead. Coming in to the winning post Fuller made a rush with Lady Heron, but was unable to overtake Miss Brizzle, who won by a head, the rest in the order named. 2. Ellesmere Cup (Handicap) of 25 sovs. 2 miles. Mr J. H. Lunn’s ch g Merry Monarch, aged," 9st (8. Osborne) 1 Mr T. Sheenan’s b g Orange Peel, 4 yrs, 7st 91b (Honor) 2 Mr Robinson’s b m Mountain Maid, aged, Sit 71b (Moore) 0 Kaiapoi also ran. Merry Monarch jumped off with the lead on the word to go being given, and was never headed throughout the race. Orange Peel was next away, with Mountain Maid in close attendance. The former was not called upon for second place, and the race throughout was somewhat uninteresting. Steeplechase, of 15 sovs; miles. No weight less than lOst 71b. Mr A. J. Keith’s blk g Stockman (A. Keith) 1 Mr T. _ Rowe’s b g Lunatic, aged (W. Hankins) 2 Mr Osborne’s g g Silvcrstream (S. Osborne) 0 Mbs Brizzle also ran. All the horses baulked at the first fence except Lunatic, who got over fairly. At the next attempt Silvcrstream and Stockman negotiated the timber, the former taking the lead, Stockman second, Miss Brizzle being last. Lunatic held the lead till the double was reached, when Stockman came up, and was first over it, Lunatic taking second place. Miss Brizzle fell and Silverstream baulked, and both were out of the race. Stockman kept the lead to the last fence coming home, when he lost a length in the jump, letting Lunatic again get the lead. Stockman, who had the most foot on the flat, soon overhauled Lunatic, and won easily. Trotting Race (Handicap) of 5 sovs., with acceptance 1 sov. added. 3 miles. Mr J. Wilson’s b m Malvina, 5 yrs (200 yds) (Wilson) 1 Mr T. Milner’s blk g Blackboy (scratch) (Powell) 2 The mare had it all her own way from start to finish, the gelding breaking frequently. Farmers’ Plate of 10 sovs. H miles. Weight lor age. Mr W. J. Lemon’s b m Miss Brizzle, 3 yrs, Bst (Honor) 1 Mr Kelhban’s cb g King Philip, 3 yrs, Bst 2 Mr Bradshaw’s b m Lady Heron, aged, 9st 81b ... ... ... ... (Fuller) 0 Strike-a-Light, Victory, and Lady Caledon also ran. Strikc-a-Light took the lead at the start, closely followed by Miss Brizzle and King Philip. After about a quarter of a mile had been gone in this order, Miss Brizzle came to the front, Strike-a-Light falling back, and King Philip taking second place. From this Out the race was between King Philip and Miss Brizzle. The latter at the turn from home came away and won easily. Consolation Handicap of .£7los. 1 mile. Mr G. Bolinson’s br m Mountain Maid, aged, Bst 71b ... ... ... (J. Moore) 1 Mr Shecnau’s b g Orange Peel, 3 yrs, Bst [ Honor) 2 Kaiapoi and Strike-a-Light also ran. Orange Peel went away with the lead, with Mountain Maid in close attendance. In this order they ran for about a quarter of the distance, when Mountain Maid came up and got on level terms with Orange Peel. They raced in the order named to close to home, Mountain Maid just winning by a short head, Jpoth being ridden out, A Pack race concluded the day’s efort,
