The Government have refunded the fine imposed on Captain Logan some time ago on nccount of over-loading the Hero. This decision has been arrived at because the alleged offence was committed under an Australian certificate, which the District Judge refused to take cognizance of, and it ha? since been ascertained that New Zealand certificates are recognised in Australian courts. The G-overnnu-nt consider that New Zealand should reciprocate. Sir Gr. Q-rey and Mr Sheehan proceeded to Waikato to-day. Colonel Whitmore, at the Artillery Volunteers' inspection last night, said, in order to provide some harbor defence for- the colony, the Government intended applying to the Imperial authorities for a number of s'xtyfour pounders converted rifle guns, same as those aboard the Wolverine and Nymph. These, in proper positions, would make the harbors impregnable to cruisers. It was intended to entrust them to the Artillery Volunteers, and encourage that branph of the service. Wellington, April 9.
