CAPITAL IN TRAMWAYS.
At the present time, says the Otago “Times,” when so much attention is being directed to the construction of tramways in all the leading towns and cities of New Zealand and the sister colonies, it is interesting to note the results that have followed the extension of this particular enterprise at Home. We clip the following tabulated statement and extracts from a Home paper:— • a S q[; -p_ _ Name of o g Original oS § Company. o 3 = u Capital. -2_; g fcm <j £ PnQi> Dublin ~ 24,000 £lO £240,0001 174 £420,000 Edinburgh ... 14,690 10 146.900 1 , 164 242,385 Glasgow ... 35,000 9 315,000 12 420,000 Hull ... 6,000 10 60,000 13,f 82,500 Liverpool ... 34.000 10 340,000 12 4 425,0C0 London ... 25,000 10 250,000 12 ; 306.250 Loudou street 12,500 10 125,000 13 162,500 North Metropolitan ... 60,000 10 600,000 174 1,050,000 The above figures speak for themselves. They show that an investment of £2,076,900 of capital at Home (or less than either of the last loans to Honduras and Costa Rica, and about l-18th part of the money entrusted to the tender mercies of the Peruvian Government) has, in a few years, under the protection of English laws, produced a profit of 49f per cent, upon the capital, in addit ion to a good dividend yield; while those who placed faith in miserable foreign Republics have lost no 1 ss a sum in the three loans above mentioned than £38,729,500.
