CANTERBURY ROWING CLUB. On Saturday afternoon some races in connection with this club were pulled off. The first was four-oars for juniors under twentyone, the prizes for which were given by Mr Revans, This gentleman, who is one of the best supportei s of the C R. 0., has presented for some seasons back very handsome prizes for this race, and his liberality has always caused a number of crews to compete. This seaaon unluckily the crews have been very much interfered with, and the race put off several tints'. Three crows were in training, but unfortunately A. C. Lean, the stroke of <me of them, fell ill a tew days before the race, and consequently his crew had to give up all hope of competing. Two crews however showed up on Saturday, and a good race for half the distance was the result, the winners not being by any means the fayoriti s at starting. The course was from Butterfield’s to the corner below Cowlishaw’s : Foub-oaeed Race, for members under twenty-one. Prizes presented by Mr S. 3, Revans. About 1 mile. Tam’esis—north bank (Newton, how; Nottingham, 2; Boulton, 3; R. J. Lanauze, stroke; C. D.iion, cox) ... 1 Ilyssus, south bank (Stringer, how ; A. Smith, 2 ; Heywood, 3; A, A, Books, stroke; C. Manning, cox) ... 2 Lanauze wus quickest away, his boat show ing a few feet in front, but Books and his crew, rowing well together, soon began to draw ahead, and at the Fellmongery led by nearly half a length. At the corner below Pratt’s Books got almost clear, but in the yards between that corner and ■Pratt's Lanauze, by a tremendous spurt, drew up level, and having the inside of Pratt s corner, got in iro.nt pf opponents, who from there to the winning post never had another show, Lanaiwe coming in first by a clear length. After the four-oar race, one heat of the Maiden double sculls was pulled off, Boulton »gmst pd m,
but the youngsters had no show against their older and heavier opponents, and the race was a hollow one from the beginning. Maiden Double Sculls with cox. About one mile. Cygnet—south bank (Brewster, bow ;Bell, stroke ; Dixon, cox ) 1 Swan—north bank (Nottingham, bow; Brittan, stroke; Manning, cox.) ... 2 The course was the same as in the four-oar race, and the crew of the Cygnet won easily by any number of lengths. On next Sa* urday afternoon the last races of the season take place, viz, the second c ntest for the Senior and Ju ior Scullina Challenge Cups. The Senior is at present held by R J Lanauze, who will have hard work to hold it agaii st P H Duncan, who intends to row for it. The Junior is in the possession of J. Gii, rson, but it is said the holder will not try to keep it this time. It is proposed to have these races on the estuary as the Avon is by no means a good place for sculling, and arrangements will be made during the week for the conveyance of men and boats to the Heathcotc on Saturday. If there are as many entries ss there ought to be, a very pleasant afternoon’s amusement may bo expected, and some good racing, especially when Lanauze and Duncan come together. The entries for these races will close on Wednesday, and the handicaps will declared on Thnrsdav.
