TAI TAPU RACES. Stewards —Messrs Egan, Milfett, Fleming, Leatham, Hayes: treasurer, Mr R. J. Fleming; sccretaryfMr Davis; clerk of tbe course, Mr John Mansoii; clerk of the scales, Mr S. Gar forth; haudicappers, Messrs Digby and Garforth; starter, Mr J. Sheehan; judge, Sir J. G. Wilson, K.C.B. The Tai Tapu races came off yesterday The weather though fine was very warm, and clouds of dust made the day a most unpleasant one. The attendance was very good, and though there was room for improvement in some of the arrangements, the various events were got off with fair punctuality. The officials discharged their duties satisfactorily, and the same may certainly bo said of Mr Judge in his position of caterer. The sport was not of the first order, for though the number of horses was larger than last year, tbe events were not very closely contested, and the favorites, with one exception, won pretty easily. Merry Monarch being reserved for the Cup, four weighed out for the open Hurdle Race, which old Ivanhoe won very easily from Young Diomedea, Satan was disposed of in a mile and a half, and Eclipse never seemed to bo in the hunt from the start. Three saddled up for the Maiden Plate, which was a gift to Orange Peel, who also easily disposed of her two opponents in the District Cup. Six came to the post for the Tai Tapu Cup, which Merry Monarch won from start to finish. His stable companion, Maritaua, ran into a place, and could, we think, have won if required. Symphony was second, but w r as never really formidable, and the others were outpaced. For the Ahuriri Stakes, Lemon Juice was made a strong favourite, but ho had not recovered from his accident at Oxford, and broke down during the race. The winner turned up in Mountain Maid, a complete outsider. Lemon J nice was scratched for the District Hurdle race, which was a gift to Charlie.
