Arawata. from Melbourne via South, with the inward Suez mail, arrived in harbor at 10 a.m. She sails for Wellington this afternoon. The barque Victoria is expected from Newcastle ■with a cargo of coals for P. Cunningham and o. The s.s. Southern Cross took aboard 1500 sheep at the Tunnel wharf, and sailed for Napier at 5.45 p.m. yesterday. The Jonn Knox was shifted from Peacock's wharf to the No. 3 wharf to finish her loading yesterdav. Prom the " New Zealand Herald " of March 28th, we learn that the schooner Lady Don cleared at the Customs on the previous day, and will sail from the Manukau this morniug for Aratapu Mills, Kaipara, there to load with timber for Lyttelton. DEATH OF THE CHIEF OFFICER OF THE HAWEA. The s.s. Hawea left Wellington wharf at 5.30 p.m. on Monday, and when off Cow Bay, some twenty minutes later, thet.rder wus given to Joose sails. The chief officer was forward superintending the setting of the upper topsail, the yard being hoisted by mems oi the steam wiucli. The mate was hanging on to the fall when the chain of the halyards parted, the large double block through which the tall passes falling a distance of tOffc., and striking the unfortunate man right on the top of the head. He fell in a state of unconsciousness on to tne bridge and was carried at once to Captain Wheeler's cabin, where every possible means was used to restore him to consciousness but in vain. Captain Wheeler immediately turned the boat's Head towards Wellington fer surgical aid, and on arrival the mate was lauded and sent to the hospital, where he wa3 placed under Dr. Diver's charge. Captain Wheeler, on arrival at Lyttelton yesterday, received a telegram staring that the poor fellow bad never rallied, but remained in a state of stupor till 7 a. in. yesterday, when he died. Deceased's name was Stevenson. He came out in the s.s. Taiaroa and remained in her till quite lately, when he joined the Hawea, this being his second trip in that vessel. The Albion Company's ship Wild Deer, with twenty-nine passengers and 1200 tons of cargo, arrived last night, after a passage of ninety-two days from Glasgow.
