RIFLE MATCH.

Civilians v. Volunteers. The deciding conte 1 ’ ■ took place yesterday, at the Hillsborough mtts, resulting in a victory for the Civilians’ team by 21 point s. Though both light and wind were unfavorable to good shooting, and thus prevented as high an average being obtained as on tho previous occasion, still some excellent scores were made. The cup presented by Mr Gunderson for the highest score on the Civilian side was won by Mr W. Hunter, who also took first prize for the highest aggregate score. To give some idea of how even the scoring was throughout, it may be mentioned that, although eighteen hundred shots were fired in all, there was only a difference of twenty-three points in tho aggregate scores of the three matches. The party left Radcliffe’s a little before ten o’clock, and, as very complete arrangements were made at the range, an exceedingly pleasant day was spent. As the Civilians were one man short, they were allowed to add an average score to the number of points made. Air Appleby captained the citizen team, and Sergeant-Major Fox the volunteers. The following are the scores :

At the conclusion of the contest the prizes were presented on the range by Mr Appleby. The tearps thou returned to town, and 00

arrival at Rndcliffo’s champagne was ordered in by Mr Appleby, when the healths of the cup winner (Mr W. Hunter), civilian and volunteer teams, Captain Warner, Mr Appleby, Sergeant Fox, and Mr Radcliffc, were drunk with musical accompaniment, and duly responded to. In the course of the speeches it was suggested that a club should be formed to promote monthly contests of a similar kind, a belief being expressed that an institution of the kind would do more to promote good rifle shooting than the present Government prizes so grudgingly given. Before the proceedings closed Captain Warner, on behalf of the volunteers, challenged the civilians to another contest, to take place next month.
