SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held this morning at the Government Buildings. Present—The Hon. John Hall (in the chair), E. J. Lee, Enys, McMillan, Matthias, and Eolleston. It was resolved that the chairman and Dr Turnbull bo requested to communicate with the Christchurch Domain Board as to the best mode of investing the £3OOO voted as an endowment for the Christchurch domain. It was resolved that the chairman and Mr Enys, with the Mayors of Christchurch and Sydenham and the chairmen of the Heathcote, Avon, Riccarton, and Sproydon Road Boards be requested to confer as to the best method of giving effect to the vote of £ISOO for a public cemetery in the vicinity of Christchurch. A deputation from the Courtenay Road Board, consisting of the Hon. Colonel Brett, Messrs W. B. Tosswill, and Patterson, waited on the Council to urge the carrying of the Malvern water-race through the Courtenay road district. The deputation urged the advisahleness of the scheme at some length, and ultimately it was resolved to defer giving an answer to the request of the deputation until after a reply had been received from the Government as to the present state of the Malvern water works question in connection with the county. After the deputation had retired, it was resolved that the chairman be requested to write again to the Colonial Government, asking for an answer as to the present position of the Malvern water supply question. The Chairman reported the resolutions arrived at by the recent conference of chairmen of counties and mayors of municipalities as to the hospital and charitable aid question, and also read the circular letter from the Government to chairmen of County Councils, asking them to take over the management of hospitals within their counties. It was resolved that the Council concur in the resolutions arrived at by the Conference, and that the chairman forward a copy of the resolution to the Colonial Secretary, expressing a hope, that the proposals embodied therein would receive the favourable consideration of the G-overnmeut.

A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary with reference to the distribution of County funds, and after some discussion, it was resolved that the chairman be requested to urge on the Q-ovornment the] re-considera-tion of their decision with regard to the County funds as conveyed in the letter referred to.

The chairman stated that the Resident Engineer had informed him that he had received instructions to carry out the survey of several branch lines in Canterbury. After the transaction of some routine business the Council adjourned.
