CRICKET.
ENGLAND v. COLONIES. At the close of play on the previous Saturday the game stood : Colonies, Ist innings, 80 ; England, 70, with three wickets down, and it was expected that the Colonies were in for a good afternoon’s leather hunting. Ashby and Wilson, the not outs, took their places at the wicket to the bowling of Peter and Hartland. In his first over Peter bowled three wides, but in his next Wilson was well caught at shortstop, but not until the score of the Colonies had been passed, the total at the fall of the third wicket being 83. Stevens joined Ashby, but a shooter from Hartland soon afterwards sent him back to the pavilion. 5 for 90. Austen came, but returned a ball to Peter which was neatly held. 6 for 93. Macdonald became Ashby’s partner, and the century was passed. When 110 appeared, Wilkinson went on in place of Peter, and the retirement of Ashby was caused by a good catch at shortstop in the next bowler’s second over. 7 for 114, of which Ashby contributed 39. It was not one of his beet efforts, but he made some grand cuts. Morrison joined Macdonnell, but was soon well caught by Hartland off his own bowling—B for 123. Morice came, but a yorker caused Macdonnell to retire after contributing 12 by a good hit off for 5, a 3, a 2, &c. Dickinson, the last man, gave an easy chance to short-slip after 10 more runs had been added, and the last wicket fell for 136 or 56 on. The Colonies commenced their second innings, and it was thought that they might make about the same total as in their first, but much to the surprise of all the first wicket did not fall until the runs short had been wiped off and a good commencement made. W. Million and Hartland began the batting, Ashby and Moore being entrusted with the bowling. Play at first was very steady, and the way in which Million stopped the straight balls from Ashby was much admired, but the bowler did not seem to appreciate it. The score gradually mounted up, small figures being the chief contributions, assisted by byes, which came too freely. At last 30 appeared, and soon afterwards Godby relieved Moore, but his second over produced 7 runs, so he handed the ball to Dickerson, and Ashby tried slows, but could make nothing of the batsmen. The score in the meantime was mounting up—the runs to the bad were made, and the score on the right side began to assume a cheerful aspect. Morice was then tried, but was not successful, his four overs costing 17 runs. Austen then went on at the lower end, Ashby having changed over, and the last change had a beneficial result, as Million failed to stop a straight ball well up from Austen, the first wicket falling for 92, of which the retiring batsman claimed 34. He has an ugly style, but hits well to the off occasionally, his chief contributions being in that direction —a 5, three 3’s, and a 2 were his principal hits. E. Cotterill ran himself out, and Ollivier had to retire after contributing 8, but Mathias was in good form on the leg side, and quickly ran up a respectable total a 5 off Ashby, a 4 off Austen, four 3’s, and a single, nearly all to leg, made up by his score of 22 not out, when time was called, Hartland being also not out for 69, made by good cricket and without a chance. His principal hits were two 4’s, eleven 3’s, and four 2’s ; the total at the call of time being 155, for the loss of three wickets; so that the match, which at the commencement of the play on Saturday last appeared all in favour of England, now assumes an even aspect, as the Colonies have equivalent to 99, for the loss of three wickets, in their second innings, and by ordinary luck may give England 150 or more to get in their second innings.
